Playa Del Carmen and whole of Yucatan Peninsula is based on layers of limestone. After a long period, due to rainfalls, this layer gets absorbed by the rain water and therefore, creates an underground water reservoir or water pools. The roof of these pools or reservoirs falls with the passage of time. These pools are said to be Cenotes and were the only source that provided fresh water to the inhabitants here.

Most of the series of Cenote Playa Del Carmen start from its south near the Highway. Most of the Cenotes are owned privately and cost a little entrance fee per person. The best cenotes are listed as:

The cenote is just at the distance of 70 meters from the gate of entrance and is easily accessible. The cenote is quite large and is quite deep at some points. There is also a rock present from where one can jump into the cool water. This cenote is owned privately and can be accessed at the cost of 25 pesos and you can get the facilities of bathrooms, changing and also a life jacket.

The water of this cenote is clear in the upper 100 feet and below the 100 feet; there lies a thick layer of Hydrogen Sulphide which looks like an island underwater, with trees on it, from above and thus separates the layer of sand from clear water. So, if you want to dive in the water of the cenote, be sure that you bring a diving light with you because it is easy to get lost in cloud of Hydrogen Sulphide layer. The cenote has an entrance fee 15$ (American) but keep in mind that there are no restaurants nearby the cenote so bring your lunch with you. There are also no bathrooms but many wooden rooms.
