Posted: Apr 13, 2015
MAME Arcade Cabinets are similar to the retro arcade cabinets that many of are used to in that they are used to store and play arcade games. The differences are much more numerous and noticeable. Where the classic arcade game cabinet was a very large, physical object that contained what was often a single game, its electronic counterpart not only takes up significantly less space, but it is also capable of storing and playing many, many more games.
While the physical arcade game machines definitely had a flavor about them that made for a unique experience and contribution to our culture, they are simply no longer liable today as a means of every day gaming. Those that now own the old stand up arcade consoles now keep them largely as memorabilia and decoration, not as every day gaming devices. Instead, those that choose to play classic arcade games in the modern day often play these games using free online emulators.
The purpose of this emulation software is to simulate the arcade cabinet experience on the PC. To accomplish this, developers have created programs that are able to take old game files and make them playable on modern systems. With the advantage of playing the games on a modern systems comes improvements to game graphics and playability that would not be available otherwise.
For instance, original game files were created with a particular screen in mind. That screen being the original screen of the arcade cabinet that held the title. A PC screen is almost never the exact same screen as the arcade cabinet. This can result in pictures that are blurry or oddly cropped. Emulation software must work to adjust the picture to display properly on modern screens. This is accomplished with varied degrees of success depending on the quality of the emulator as well as the individual ROMs themselves.
From time to time, settings must be adjusted again by the user to get the best quality image for each specific ROM that is loaded. This can be very frustrating for non-skilled users or for those that simply want to enjoy their game without worrying over the technical aspect of MAME emulation. At this point, a front end program can be very useful. A front end is an additional program that a user can employ to detect issues and make adjustments within the emulator on their behalf.
Gameex in particular has developed an excellent front end for MAME emulators that works almost universally across a wide variety of different emulation programs. The ten years that this program has existed has given its creators time to work out bugs and flaws in the programming that would make this front end difficult to use. Regular updates and patches from the company means that minor issues that may appear periodically. Any fan of MAME emulation would be wise to give this program a try. See how it can greatly enhance your emulator and improve the overall quality of your modern arcade gaming experience.
