Driving to Abu Dhabi? The Essential Guide to Tolls, Speed Limits, and No-Buffer Zones

One of the most popular questions we get at the Drivzy desk is: "Can I take the rental car to Abu Dhabi?"

The answer is a definite YES.

A road trip to the capital is a must. The Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, the Louvre Abu Dhabi, and Ferrari World are all just a 1.5-hour drive down the E11 highway. It’s a straight, smooth, and beautiful drive.

However, there is a catch.

The moment you cross the border from Dubai into Abu Dhabi, the driving rules change. And if you aren't paying attention, that change can be expensive. I’ve seen too many tourists come back with AED 600 worth of speeding fines because they didn’t know one simple rule.

Here is your essential survival guide for the Dubai-to-Abu Dhabi run.

1. The "Buffer" Disappears (The Most Important Rule)

This is where 90% of people get caught.

  • In Dubai: We have a 20 km/h "buffer." If the sign says 120 km/h, the camera usually won't flash until 141 km/h.

  • In Abu Dhabi: There is NO BUFFER.

The second you pass the border (usually marked by a change in pavement color or large "Welcome to Abu Dhabi" signs), the rule is strict.

  • If the sign says 140 km/h, the camera flashes at 141 km/h.

  • If the sign says 120 km/h, the camera flashes at 121 km/h.

My Advice: When you see the signs change, set your cruise control to the exact speed limit posted. Do not try to push it. The fines in Abu Dhabi start at AED 300 and go up quickly.

2. The Toll Gates Are Different (Salik vs. DARB)

You know about Salik in Dubai (the tag on your windshield). Abu Dhabi has its own system called DARB.

  • The Good News: You don’t need to do anything. Your Drivzy rental car is already registered.

  • The Cost: Like Salik, there is a fee (AED 4) for passing under these gates during peak hours.

  • The Timing: Unlike Dubai (which charges 24/7), DARB gates are currently only active during peak hours (usually 7:00 AM – 9:00 AM and 5:00 PM – 7:00 PM, Monday to Saturday). Note: Timings can change, so always check the latest updates.

We handle all these payments for you. When you return the car, we will give you a breakdown of your Salik and DARB usage and deduct it from the deposit or final bill.

3. The Distance & The Car

The drive from Dubai Marina to Abu Dhabi Corniche is roughly 110 km to 130 km.

  • Time: About 1 hour 15 minutes to 1 hour 30 minutes.

Because this is a highway drive, the type of car matters.

  • Economy Cars: A Nissan Sunny or Kia Pegas will get you there fine, but at 140 km/h, smaller engines work hard and can be a bit noisy.

  • The Upgrade: For this trip, I always recommend upgrading to a standard sedan (like a Toyota Camry or Chevrolet Malibu) or an SUV. The extra stability and sound insulation make that 90-minute cruise much less tiring.

4. Parking in the Capital (Mawaqif)

Dubai has RTA parking; Abu Dhabi has Mawaqif.

  • The Colors: Turquoise and White curbs are standard public parking. Turquoise and Black are often for residents only (avoid these).

  • How to Pay: Just like Dubai, you can pay via SMS, but the code is different. You usually text 3009. The format is typically:

    CityCode PlateCode PlateNumber ParkingType(S/P) Duration

(Don't worry, the instructions are usually printed clearly on the payment machines nearby).

5. Can I Go to Ferrari World?

Absolutely. Yas Island (home to Ferrari World, Warner Bros, and the F1 Track) is actually before downtown Abu Dhabi. It’s an easy exit off the main highway and has plenty of massive parking lots.

Conclusion:
  1. Check the Tires: Highway driving heats up tires. All Drivzy cars undergo strict safety checks, but a quick visual look before you leave never hurts.

  2. Reset Your Brain: Remember: 140 means 140.

  3. Enjoy the View: The drive past the Jebel Ali port and through the desert is unique.
