The different approaches to retail space design means your business, while offering the same products as a nearby facility, can be a bigger force in your particular field. This means more money and eventually expansion and other benefits.
Maximize Space Use Without Irritating Clients
Setting up a store space is a challenge. You need to be able to fit in the most variety of products you can. However, you can't simply jam the space with product and require customers to walk through close quarters to view it all. This increases the chance of customers brushing against each other, which invades personal space and usually turns a customer off from future visits.
Choose an Appropriate Layout
Visiting a grocery store or a large franchise typically can be a trip where you know what to expect before you set foot inside the doors. Lines of aisles are very straight and organized. This works well for food and budget-priced items. However, your particular product line, such as clothing, might not work as well in straight-line aisles. Clothing and other products may be better suited to a more circular layout. Other options include a free flowing design. This tends to encourage more last-minute purchasing decisions—for more whimsical products this may be the way to go.
Choose Checkout Locations Wisely
Set up a checkout or counter in a location where the flow of traffic will naturally reach. However, don't set up too many of these locations, as you will actually detract from customer satisfaction. Despite wanting more opportunities to check out to minimize time spent in a store, customers actually get frustrated if there are too many checkouts and they inhibit browsing patterns.
Signs are Beneficial – Especially at the Entrance
Selling your store to passersby is a big necessity. No matter how appealing your in-store design is, it can't reach people if they walk by the entrance without being drawn in. Therefore, use big signs, interesting or unbeatable sales or other product-specific intrigue to get the customers in the door. Once inside, the layout and impressive entrance displays can keep the customers interested all the way to the checkout counter.
Consider Creating a Path to Follow
For most customers, their entrance is through the central area, as you intended. Next, roughly 9 out of 10 people will go right. If you want to use this trend in your favor, create a contrasting visual aspect to the floor that leads the customers to the right and through the store in the way that will be most appealing and encourage a leisurely yet continuous trip. Eventually this visual contrast can make its way back to the front of the store, preferably by the cash register to optimize sales.
Don't Be Afraid of Change
First of all, variety in retail is the spice that breathes life into your business. Customers enjoy coming back and discovering new displays, new products or other new aspects to your store. For you, this is a benefit. An initial setup for a store is bound to have a few areas that need work. Customers can help you realize the changes that need to be made. Once you have done this "research", take heart in the fact that making changes is good for you and will be something your customers appreciate.
Retail space design is not an exact science. There are many aspects that should be important to only your particular space. For that reason, store owners can not expect to mimic others and find complete success. Trial and error in retail is a way of life.
