They say it’s the suit that makes the man, but what they often miss out is that, little things also matter. If not paid attention, these little things can be your undoing. When you wear a suit or even a formal shirt for that matter, you have to wear a tie. This little knot around your neck can tell people so much about how you take care of yourself, your priorities and what you aspire to be. Surprising right, how simple little things can do so much. But you have no reason to fret. Once you master some basic steps in the selection process, it becomes very easy to play with colours, fabrics and patterns.

Picking the right tie for the occasion

"Nice tie!" That’s what people are likely to say when they meet you. A tie can grab attention like no other accessory, so whether you are suiting up for office or trying out a look for the evening date make sure that you pick a tie that complements the rest of your outfit and not stand apart or clash with it.

Whatever may be your height, the accepted rule is that the tip of the tie should hit right at your beltline - not above or below it. This rule is accepted when you are not wearing a suit. But if you are, then it is okay to let your tie hang tight above the navel. And just like the length, the width also matters. Narrow is fine, but not super skinny. Look for something that is three finger wide. This width works for both office and casual wear.

Now, the colour and pattern are important too. Keep it solid. Solid ties can play down a gingham shirt while it can stand out strong against a crisp white shirt. Solid ties are fail-safe. Don’t go for loud wallpaper prints or dizzying paisleys, unless required.

There are five fail-safe ties that you can have in your wardrobe and you would be set for every outfit and occasion.

  • Wool - Perfect for winter wear and you can pair it up with a heavy suit.

  • Solid black - For all formal wear occasions. You can pair this up with almost anything. For instance a grey suit and white shirt or a leather jacket.

  • Pin-dot - Just like a polka-dot, but only this is much more subtle and smarter.

  • Club - If you are looking for some serious style, then go for this. It comes with repeating logos of famous organizations. For instance, logo of a university.

  • Repp - A classic among government officials, this is now modernized and cut skinny for the hip people.
