Organic Futon Mattresses: Why You Should Buy One

Modern homes are leaning towards simplicity. Following in the tradition of Japanese futon mattresses, it is not unusual to see futons in today's modern households. Old futons, however, are traditionally made with the same materials as conventional mattresses, which mean they pose the same risks of chemical off-gassing and toxin inhalation after long-term use. This is why many people are also switching to organic futon mattresses that help lessen these risks.

Mostly, Organic futons are made out of organic batting (cotton, wool, etc.) that easily conforms to the body's curves. Organic materials like cotton and wool also have unique qualities that allow temperature control and breathability, thus ensuring utmost comfort.

Organic futons are available in many standard sizes, ideal for homes with varying needs. Futon thicknesses also vary, providing users with the firmness or softness that they want for a sleeping surface. Most popular are 8" thick futons.

Mattresses need to be compliant with strict standards by law, especially when it comes to fire resistance. Because of this, putting chemical flame retardants on mattresses have been the practice since strict laws were passed. These chemicals have the tendency to off-gas with long-term use, exposing users to potentially dangerous toxins, which can be inhaled or absorbed through the skin, causing various irritations and other grave illnesses.

This is also why many people are switching to healthier mattresses that are free from these chemicals. Manufacturers of organic mattresses use organic materials produced with the least exposure to chemicals, thus coming up with end products that offer freedom from their potential dangers. Organic futons and mattresses do not use chemical flame retardants and instead use materials with natural flame resistant characteristics, like natural wool.

It is important to read labels whenever shopping for organic or natural products because some manufacturers may add "natural" flame retardants like boric acid to their natural fabric ticking, which may still pose their own set of health hazards. Organic and chemical free wool is probably the best choice for a naturally flame resistant material as it does not only offer natural resilience to flame and natural wear, but also offers improved thermal comfort, through its natural thermal regulation properties. Wool also offers anti-microbial benefits as it has natural lanolin, and helps with dust mite resistance. Wool may not be as soft as cotton, but it does add a hint of softness to futons.
