ABB solar inverters have been used at Amcorp Power Sdn Bhd’s Gemas 10.25 Megawatt (MW) PV power plant in Malaysia - the country's largest solar power station. Located around 160 kilometers from the Malaysian capital Kuala Lumpur, the plant accounts for approximately 11 percent of Malaysia's nearly 116 megawatts of grid-connected solar photovoltaic (PV) installed capacity. ABB supplied TRIO three-phase solar inverters for the facility, which convert DC power from the solar panels into AC at 98.3 percent efficiency.

In addition to the inverters, Gemas also utilizes ABB’s Plant Portfolio Manager; software combining a highly interactive dashboard with real-time remote performance monitoring over computer networks or mobile devices. ABB’s says its solar solutions will play an important role in the uptake of renewable energy in Malaysia; which has set a target of 975 MW or 5.5 percent by 2015 and 2.065 GW, or 11 percent by 2020. Solar power is expected to contribute a minimum of 220 MW.

"Renewable energy, in particular solar, will play an increasingly important role in the energy mix of countries that represent a significant portion of the world’s economic growth for decades to come," said Pekka Tiitinen, head of ABB’s Discrete Automation and Motion division. "ABB’s portfolio of products, including the inverters we’re delivering here along with our service offering, will ensure that Malaysia has access to clean, green power even as the technologies evolve." The ABB Group of companies operates in around 100 countries and employs approximately 145,000 people.

In July last year, ABB completed its acquisition of solar inverter manufacturer Power-One. Power-One solar inverters, a popular choice for home and commercial solar panel systems in Australia, have recently been re-branded to ABB. ABB has a history reaching back to the 1800's and is the product of many acquisitions and mergers, primarily the 1988 merger of ASEA of Sweden and Switzerland's BBC, formerly known as Brown Boveri. Solar power collected during the day charges a lithium-sulphur battery in the Zephyr 7 that is used to power the flight during darkness. As this test was conducted during winter, sun hours were shorter and general weather conditions harsher; making the test all the more challenging. "During this most recent flight of the Airbus Zephyr, we successfully demonstrated a number of advancements that are critical to achieving the operational readiness of the technology and that increase its operational value for our customers," said Jens Federhen, Head of the Airbus HAPS programme.
