The princess cut is among the most popular diamond cuts especially when it comes to engagement rings. It was created by Israel Itzkowitz and Betzalel Ambar in 1980. The cut is traditionally square, with four sides of equal length. You may find princess cut diamonds that are slightly rectangular, too, though this might be difficult to tell because they still appear square to the human eye. That said, a slightly rectangular princess cut diamond would often have a lower price.

This History of the Diamond Engagement Ring

The concept of giving a ring for betrothal has been faithfully practised since Pope Innocent III mandated new rules for weddings in the 12th century. He said that the bride must receive a ring and that the couple must have a waiting period between the betrothal and the wedding. Hence, European aristocrats started giving engagement rings to the person they intend to marry as they counted down the days to their wedding day.

It was not until the late 19th century when diamonds became the traditional engagement stone of choice. Prior to that, diamonds were extremely rare. Miners only began to discover several diamond veins in South Africa in the 1870s. Eventually, De Beers—a well-known known name in diamonds in the market— effectively gained control of the diamond trade and started actively marketing this stone as an engagement tradition.

Why the Princess Cut?

Princess cut diamonds are versatile and can go with almost any ring style. Their price-per-carat is slightly lower than round cut diamonds, too, making them a more affordable alternative to those who want to buy a diamond engagement ring for their betrothed. The reason for this is the four-sided pyramid shape, which is similar to half of an octahedron rough stone from which the princess diamond is cut. The similarity lets two equal-sized princess cut diamonds to be cut from one rough stone without any waste. Moreover, about 60 percent of the weight of the actual rough stone is retained. The greater yield or efficiency means a lower price.

Princess cut diamonds look elegant when set. They should always be set with the prongs of the ring protecting their four corners to prevent chipping. Prongs on the four corners may help conceal a few flaws, like extra facets and naturals.

Where to Buy a Princess Cut Diamond Engagement Ring

Buy only from a high-end jeweller that has been in business for a long time. One of the leading diamond retailers and jewellers in Sydney has been selling certified diamonds for more than six decades. A reputable diamond retailer can help you evaluate the cut and colour of the princess cut diamond, and they can create the diamond engagement ring for you, too.
