Should You Wait or Buy an Electric Scooter Now?

Every time I'm stuck at a petrol pump watching the meter spin faster than my head during tax season, this question pops up: should I finally make the switch to electric, or wait a bit longer for the "perfect" EV scooter?

I've been riding petrol scooters for over a decade now, and honestly, the electric revolution feels both exciting and overwhelming. There's always that nagging thought, what if something better launches next month? What if prices drop? What if the range improves dramatically?

But here's what I've realised after test riding several electric scooters and talking to friends who've already made the switch.

The "Perfect Time" Myth

We Indians have this habit of waiting for the perfect moment, be it buying a phone, booking a vacation, or switching to electric. But the truth is, there's never really a perfect time for anything.

The current crop of electric scooters, including options like the VIDA, already handles most of our daily needs pretty well. With real-world ranges of 80-100 km in city conditions, they're more than adequate for the typical Indian commuter who rides 40-60 km daily. That covers your office commute, weekend grocery runs, and those inevitable detours to pick up relatives from the metro station.

Yes, technology will keep improving. Batteries will get better, charging will get faster, and prices might come down. But they're already good enough for most of us right now. The VIDA's removable battery setup, for instance, solves one of the biggest concerns about EV ownership: you can literally carry the battery to your third-floor apartment and charge it overnight. No more hunting for charging stations or worrying about parking near power outlets.

The Cost Reality Check

Let's talk money, something we all think about while sipping chai and calculating monthly expenses.

My petrol scooter currently costs me around ₹2-3 per kilometre, considering fuel, maintenance, and those periodic engine troubles. Electric scooters bring this down to roughly ₹0.15-0.25 per kilometre. Even if you factor in the higher upfront cost, most people break even within 2-3 years of regular riding.

But here's the kicker: government subsidies and incentives are available right now. There's no guarantee these will stick around indefinitely. State governments are already tweaking their EV policies, and waiting might mean missing out on these benefits entirely.

Real-World Advantages You Get Today

After spending time with electric scooter owners, I've noticed some unexpected benefits that don't show up in spec sheets.

The silence is therapeutic, especially in our honking, chaotic traffic. No more warming up the engine, no gear shifting stress in stop-and-go traffic, and definitely no more visits to the mechanic for oil changes and engine tuning.

The instant torque is genuinely fun; that quick acceleration from traffic lights feels satisfying every single time. And for those living in apartments or gated communities, the convenience of home charging is a game-changer. No more petrol pump queues, no more checking fuel levels before every ride.

When Waiting Makes Sense

That said, waiting isn't always wrong. If your daily commute consistently exceeds 100 km or you frequently take long highway trips, current electric scooters might feel limiting. Similarly, if you're someone who rides maybe twice a week and your petrol scooter is running fine, there's no rush.

Also, if you're in a smaller city where electric-scooter service networks are still developing, waiting another year might be wise.

My Take

The electric scooter market has matured enough for most urban riders to make the switch comfortably. The infrastructure is growing, the technology is reliable, and the economics make sense.

Sure, the scooter you buy today might not be the absolute best available two years from now. But it'll still be doing its job, getting you from point A to point B efficiently, quietly, and cheaply. Sometimes, good enough is actually perfect enough.

The question isn't really about the perfect electric scooter; it's about whether you're ready to embrace a different way of riding. If the answer is yes, now is as good a time as any.
