What’s Expected From Me After Weight Loss Surgery?

There’s no denying that losing weight and keeping it off is a tough road to navigate. For many people, the ups and downs of loss and gains follow them throughout life. When a commitment to getting healthy and staying that way isn’t present, chances are any real victories with weight loss will soon be left in the past.

But, what about those who undergo weight loss surgery? Can these procedures actually serve to end the ups and downs once and for all?

The answer is yes and no. Weight loss surgery in and of itself will help control appetite and make it harder for people to eat in abundance without feeling discomfort. That means food intake in any one sitting will be limited, but that doesn’t mean that an unhealthy weight won’t persist. If using this type of surgery to the best advantage possible is the plan, the truth is patients have to get serious about gaining greater control over their health. That means:

  • A smart diet is a must – Weight loss won’t be guaranteed after surgery if the food consumed isn’t nutrient packed, healthy and balanced. While that doesn’t mean every snack and sweet has to be forgotten forever, it does mean making the most of every meal by eating right to promote nutrition and weight loss both. When only small portions can comfortably fit in the stomach, it’s simply critical to make every bite (or near to it) count.
  • Exercise is also important – Losing weight without adding in an exercise component tends to deliver unhappy results. Getting active right after surgery may not be possible, but once medical clearance is given, it’s best to gradually work an exercise routine into daily life.

Weight loss surgery alone cannot help people shed pounds and keep them off. To get the desired results, you, too, must be serious about eating smartly and getting active to improve overall health as the pounds go away.
