It doesn't matter who you are, where you're going or what you're taking with you - everyone knows that moving is a difficult and stressful thing to do. For many people, once they have settled down into a home, they’ll do everything they can to avoid moving.

Although moving is one of the last things you would prefer to do, sometimes, it is an inevitable part of life. Whether you’re an 18-year-old who is just moving out of the house, or you have met your future spouse and will be moving into your first home together, finding anything you can to make the moving process easier will be beneficial for everyone.

Don’t Buy Moving Items

With the cost of a moving truck and, if you have a lot of stuff, a moving company, the costs of moving can become pretty high. These costs don’t include things like packing materials, boxes and blankets for inside of the moving truck. Depending on whether you’re hiring movers or moving yourselves, the blankets may or may not be included in the costs.

Instead of buying moving items, try to use things that you have around the house. For example, using socks to pad the insides of glasses or shirts to wrap around your breakables will not only protect them from being damaged, but you won’t have to buy bubble wrap. It will also allow you to ensure that everything is getting packed and nothing is forgotten. Another frugal way to avoid the costs of moving items, is by visiting your local fast food restaurant. Stores usually just break down boxes and put them aside to be thrown away. They may be willing to provide you with the boxes for free.

Go Through Unused Items

Before you begin moving, one way to make the process easier is to get rid of the things you don’t need or won’t be using at your new home. If you have a closet full of shoes that don’t fit or clothes that you don’t wear, consider donating them to a shelter or thrift store. If the weather is nice, throwing together a quick garage sale, depending on how much time you have before the move, can get you a couple extra dollars and help you get rid of things you won’t need.

Be sure to keep in mind what your new home is going to have. For instance, if you have a carpet cleaner but your new house has wood floors, it may be an unnecessary item to bring along - especially if you are never going to have carpets again. Selling it will get you extra cash and it will prevent the stress of having to carry a big item into your home.

Rent a Storage Unit

Renting a storage unit before the move can potentially make the move easier and cheaper. Once you begin putting your items into storage, you’ll be able to access them at any time and move them when you choose. So, if you’re moving from an apartment building into a home and have purchased large items for your home, throwing them into storage will allow you to still live comfortably in your apartment but know that once you move, you will have the furniture you need.

Another benefit of a storage unit is that it can save you money. Any items you can move into your unit before your actual move-in date can reduce the costs of a moving truck. Instead of having to make ten trips back and forth, finding a storage facility close to your new home will reduce the cost of the truck, since most companies charge by the mile.

Moving doesn’t have to be an experience that will make you want to rip out your hair. It can be a fun and stress-free time, as long as you do what you can to make the process run smoothly and try to save money along the way.

About the author: Rose Muller has moved at least five times in the past 12 years since her husband has been in the military. When she, her husband and her two kids had to move again after settling in California, they found StorCal, which was between both homes, and kept items in storage until they knew they were staying. Now, they finally have a permanent home of their own and still keep the storage unit for things they don’t use year-round.
