How I Started Selling Subscriptions on Shopify Without a Payment Gateway
Posted: May 01, 2026
Hey everyone,
I wanted to share something that might help other Shopify merchants who feel stuck trying to launch subscriptions without access to a recurring payment gateway.
For the longest time, I thought subscriptions were simply not an option for me. I kept reading about how they generate stable recurring revenue, improve customer retention, and increase lifetime value, but every solution I found required Stripe or Shopify Payments with auto-charge enabled. Neither worked in my region.
So I hit a wall.
The Problem I FacedHere’s what I was dealing with:
No supported payment gateway for recurring billing
High compliance requirements for the few available options
Customers (especially B2B) who didn’t want automatic charges anyway
I considered manually sending invoices every month, but that wouldn’t scale.
What Actually WorkedI eventually came across invoice-based subscription billing, and honestly, it changed everything for me.
Instead of auto-charging customers, the system sends them an invoice at each billing cycle. Once they pay, the order is created automatically in Shopify.
No gateway dependency. No manual tracking.
How My Setup Works NowHere’s my current workflow:
Customer subscribes through my Shopify store
At each billing cycle, an invoice is sent automatically
Customer pays using the invoice link
The order is created instantly after payment
I fulfill it like any regular order
That’s it.
Everything is automated, and I’m finally generating consistent recurring revenue without needing Stripe or Shopify Payments.
Why This Model Makes SenseAfter using it for a while, I actually prefer this approach in some ways:
Works in any region (no gateway restrictions)
Perfect for B2B customers who expect invoices
Better for high-ticket subscriptions (customers like reviewing before paying)
Still fully automated no extra workload
If you fall into any of these categories, this might help you too:
You don’t have access to a recurring payment gateway
You sell to businesses or wholesale clients
Your subscription products are higher priced
You want to start subscriptions without waiting months for approvals
Before this, subscriptions felt impossible for my store. Now, they’re a growing part of my business and a reliable source of recurring revenue.
It’s honestly frustrating that this option isn’t talked about more, because it solves a huge problem for merchants outside major supported regions.
