If you’ve ever wanted to just get out of your head and into your body, maybe it’s time to join lessons from a Los Angeles contemporary dance company. These classes get you moving in a way that feels expressive and so very freeing — no rigid counts, no pressure to "look right"!

Build control you can carry into everyday life

Contemporary dance looks fluid, but make no mistake — it’s not easy. You need strength to control your movements, especially through your core. You need flexibility to hit certain positions and move through them without strain. And you need balance to hold those off-center moments so that you don’t tip over. At the same time, your range of motion improves. Movements that feel tight at first start to open up, and your body becomes so much more responsive and more controlled. This carries into daily life. Those things, like bending down or balancing on one leg, you’ve struggled with? You’ll find yourself doing them much more easily.

No two classes feel the same

A big part of what draws people to a Los Angeles contemporary dance company is that the classes are legitimate workouts but don’t feel repetitive. And they’re also mentally lighter because you’re not having to chase perfect lines the whole time. You get to explore contrasting qualities of movement: sharp vs. soft, controlled vs. loose.

There’s a lot of improvisation, too! Sometimes all you’ll get from your instructor are prompts. No script and no set sequence. You simply react to the music or the feeling in your body.

What to wear for your first contemporary dance lessons

The atmosphere of these classes is focused but not tense. You don’t need anything complicated.

Wear something you can move in, like comfortable leggings or sweatpants and a T-shirt. Some people like to wear more fitted clothes so they can check their alignment, others prefer looser layers. Either works.

Most classes are barefoot, but you can wear socks or dance half-shoes if that feels better!

The main thing to expect is intensity. It’s a full-body session, and it can get high-energy. You’ll be moving the entire time.
