Jewelry adorned with pearls have long been sought after by women all over the world, but some of these women are having some trouble trying to purchase their own set of pearls. This can be partially attributed to a lack of knowledge on how to properly shop around for the right kind of pearls. While most of us would immediately think about pearls coming from oysters, we sometimes forget to remember the ones that come from freshwater mollusks such as mussels. Freshwater pearls are more affordable compared to saltwater ones and they have the same quality and durability as them, too.

There was a time when freshwater pearls were only considered for use with costume jewelry, but some advancements have made it possible for them to rival saltwater pearls in terms of both beauty and size. However, purchasing some freshwater pearl jewelry will still require you to have a basic understanding of jewelry so that you will be able to avoid purchasing a product that is either inferior or of poor quality.

One similarity that both freshwater pearls and seawater pearls share with one another is how they are all "cultured" or farmed. Both types of cultivation involve the introduction of an irritant into the mollusk’s shell which supposedly stimulates the production of pearls. Considering the fact that both freshwater and seawater pearls are grown in the exact same way and how the pearl quality of the former has experienced a significant increase over the years, one can’t help but wonder why seawater pearls are more expensive.

The reason for this is because seawater pearls are grown inside oysters while their freshwater counterparts are being grown inside mussels. Mussels are much larger compared to oysters and their bigger girth makes it possible for them to produce up to 20 pearls at a given time. This allows harvesters to yield more pearls, thus making it a far more effective and practical solution. Their size and production have also increased a lot over the years, and this is what makes them ideal for those who wish to purchase freshwater pearl jewelry at a bargain price.
