Among the most frequent symptoms of perimenopause and menopause are hot flashes. IN almost 2/3rd of American women hot flashes happen during perimenopause. Every woman with induced or premature menopause has hot flashes. Here we are going to detail about the hot flashes and their treatment.

Hot Flash-What is it

Hot flash is a quick and spontaneous feeling of heat, sweating and sometimes red and flushed face. There is not information about what can be the exact cause of hot flashes but commonly it is associated with circulation changes.

Blood vessels near the skin surface quickly dilate to cool when hot flashes happen. In some women it is also known to cause chills and rapid heart rate. Sweating and chills often occur at nights which make it hard to sleep.

The duration of hot flashes vary from time to time. In some women they remain for a very short period during menopause while in some they are lifelong. However the severity of hot flashes lowers with time.

The Treatment

Women usually get anxious when they have menopauses but there is no reason to get restless. Probably there is no way to avoid the hot flashes and they will occur with menopause. But you definitely can avoid triggering agents which cause severe hot flashes.

The triggers to avoid are:

  • Caffeine
  • Spicy foods
  • Stress
  • Alcohol
  • Tight clothing
  • Smoking
  • Heat

You can also improvise your living environment to keep hot flashes at bay. Some changes that you can make are:

  • Staying in cool place. Maintain the room temperature of your bedroom to low. Wear light colored and natural fibered like dresses like cotton wears.
  • Deep breathing can be helpful to deal with hot flashes. Practice deep breathing for 15 minutes in morning and evening. At the onset of a hot flash start deep breathing it will help.
  • Exercises like swimming, walking, dancing, bicycling and yoga can also help.
  • Chill pillows and cooler pillows are helpful, use them below your head can also be helpful.

Apart from these home remedies you can also go for prescription treatment and therapies. Hormone replacement therapy for around 5 years is found to prevent hot flashes in many women. HRT also helps with other symptoms like mood swings and vaginal dryness. However there are some risks involved with HRT like you can get back hot flashes when therapy is stopped, medical risks like gallbladder inflammation and blood clots.

If hormone therapy is not suitable for your there are other alternatives which your doctor can advise. There are some nonprescription treatments like taking Vitamin B complex, Ibuprofen and Vitamin E capsules. Prescription treatments that you can opt for include:

  • Depression drugs like fluoxetine, paroxetine and venlafaxine
  • Gabapentin which is an antiseizure drug
  • Clonidine which is a blood pressuremedication
  • Specific drugs for hot flashes like Brisdelle and Duavee

Whatever treatment you are considering make sure that you are consulting with your doctor. This will help you to better deal with hot flashes.
