When exploring the Canadian immigration pathway you may have come across the term "Experience Class Draw." It may sound like a lot but it is actually quite easy when you get the basics. And, if you have already worked in Canada, this might be the easiest pathway to permanent residency.

Let's go over it.

To begin, you can try Express Entry

The Check Your Eligibility for Canada PR is part of a larger program called Express Entry. This is the primary means of processing PR applications for skilled workers in Canada. You create a profile, receive a score and wait to be invited to apply. Canada makes regular selections of candidates through "draws," and those who are successful receive an Invitation to Apply for permanent residence.

That's the foundation. Let's now discuss the Experience Class.

What is Canadian Experience Class?

Canada holds two kinds of draws: general draws, which select from the overall Express Entry pool, and program-specific draws, which target the applicants in a specific immigration program. One of the main immigration programs offered by Express Entry is the Canadian Experience Class (CEC). It's not an occupation-based category; it's a PR pathway on its own that's for those who have been living in Canada and have been working there.

A CEC draw only considers candidates who are eligible for the CEC. Don't forget, you are already here, you have contributed, you know the average salary in canada and you fit in. Let's make it official, Canada.

Who Qualifies?

The CEC requires skilled work experience in Canada (on a work permit, in a skilled occupation). You won't be credited with work experience from your home country here. That's the reason why CEC is a bit different from other Express Entry streams.

This is most relevant if you are on a Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) following studies in Canada, or working in this country on an Employer-Sponsored Permit. If this resonates with you, the CEC is probably the most natural thing for you to do.

How does the draw work?

It's very easy to do. You develop your Express Entry profile and receive a CRS score, which is your Comprehensive Ranking System score, depending on your skill in work experience, education, age and language. The higher the score, the better chances!

Canada only reviews CEC-eligible candidates and invites candidates with a high enough score. If you are sent a letter of invitation to apply, then you will be given a limited number of days to submit your complete PR application. Approval means that you are becoming a permanent resident.

Be honest with yourself

One thing that many people overlook is that CEC draws are competitive. You're only facing other CEC candidates, as opposed to the entire pool; those candidates are strong. They've lived in Canada, and they typically possess a Canadian education, and solid language scores. The cut-off for CEC for most draws will be high, typically at 510 or higher.

So go in prepared. Work on profile improvements: Take the language test again if you can get a better score at a later time, consider further study or find out if a job offer can help you achieve a higher score. Every point counts.

The Bottom Line

The Canadian Experience Class draw is designed to appeal to those who've already made all the sacrifices to build a life in Canada. This pathway is for you if you've been working here, paying taxes and giving back to the community.
