Study in the top Indian Institutes of Management

If you have passed out from the Indian Institutes of Management, you surely have a solid reference for your Resume. You would be offered better jobs, and will have a better job prospect. Well, the IIMs have around 19 public and autonomous institutes offering management education in India. They offer doctoral, postgraduate and executive education programs. The IIM was first established by Jawaharlal Nehru, who was the first Prime Minister of India. And, the institute was formed on the recommendation from Planning Commission.

All the IIMs are registered under Indian Societies Registration Act. Every single IIM is autonomous and has independent control over the day to day operations of their institute. There is an IIM council, which oversees the complete administration and overall strategy for all the IIMs. The council is headed by the HRD minister of India, and the chairpersons and directors are also from the Ministry of HRD.

All the IIMs offer 2 years Post graduate programmes. These are equivalent to the regular MBAs. There are also 1 year post graduate diploma programmes, offered by some IIMs. This is provided to the graduates, who have more work experience. Then, there are the Fellowship programmes and doctoral programmes, which are equivalent to the PhD. Recently, the executive management programmes have also become quite popular.

Given below is the list of famous IIMs in India:

  1. IIM, Calcutta: It was the first to be set up, in 1961. Other than the PGDM programmes, the institute offers 2 year full time postgraduate programmes in PGDCM or the PG Diploma in Computer Management. The institute also offers specialized 1 year postgraduate programmes for the executives in manufacturing sector.
  2. IIM, Ahmedabad: It was the second one to be established. And, it is as famous as the Calcutta one. Other than the regular PG Diploma programmes, it also offers 2 years postgraduate programmes in the Agri-business management. Other than that, it also offers 1 year postgraduate programme in Public Management and Policy.
  3. IIM, Bangalore: This was established in 1973. It also offers programmes in the Enterprise management apart from the regular programmes.
  4. IIM, Lucknow: This was established in 1984. Other than the campus in Lucknow, it also has another campus in Noida. It focuses on providing executive programmes to the working professionals.
  5. IIM, Calicut: This was established in the year 1996, and was the first institute for offering distance learning management programmes in Asia. The programmes were mainly targeted for the working executives.
  6. IIM, Indore: Established in year 1996, the institute is famous for its unique courses for the armed force officers. The institute also has additional campuses in UAE and Mumbai. It also offers a 5 year course, which can be applied for, after 12th class itself.
  7. IIM, Shillong: Established in 2005, it was also known as the Rajiv Gandhi IIM.
  8. IIM Rohtak: This is the 8th IIM, and was established in 2010.

Other than these IIMs, there are also other IIMs in Ranchi, Raipur, Trichy, Kashipur and Udaipur. Studying in IIM can give you a competitive edge.
