India is a great place for education, and for pursuing higher education. There are various courses, and various educational institutes to choose from. The Indian Institute of Technology is supposed to be one of the top Indian institutes for Engineering. The institute is placed in the 50th position in the world, and holds the 2nd rank in the field of Engineering, after MIT.

There are companies which keep ranking the top Engineering colleges in India. And, the ranking for the engineering colleges are done, based on the quality of the students, the industry interface, research output, academic productivity, and refereed publications. This is done, so that the engineering aspirants in the country can find help and take informed decisions. And, they can make a wise choice of engineering colleges.

The top engineering colleges are decided so that the colleges are examined on the composite scale, and those colleges can be excluded, which don’t have rounded personalities. There are various other intangibles, which constitute the learning experience, which cannot be captured. So, a person should make use of the first level analysis for shortlisting the colleges, and then do a further research, before deciding on the right college.

Among the top engineering colleges in India, we have IITs and NITs leading. NIT Rourkela offers almost 31 programmes in the undergraduate level, and IIT Kharagpur is the leading institute for postgraduate studies, offering 58 programmes. Then, there are institutes such as MS Ramaiah Institute of Technology in Bangalore, Jadavpur University’s Faculty of Engineering, Government Engineering Colleges, Karunya University and others. When you look at the research front, the IITs command the most amount of respect. The total publications account to about 8200, with an average of around 1200 publications, at institute level. But, there are some other private institutes too, which give tough competition to IITs. And, these include VIT in Vellore, BITS Pilani, Thapar University, Panjab University, IISER in Mohali and Bhopal, Jiwaji University, etc., which are also recognized as top engineering colleges.

In fact, there is also an emerging trend of starting off as entrepreneurs. And, this trend is emerging in the academic campus itself. IIT Bombay has been able to graduate around 29 firms.

If you are an international student, and desire to earn degree in India, then you will need to show some proof of completing a minimum of 12 years of education in their origin country. There might be entrance exams also, which the students might have to take. There are usually no direct admission to the dental, medical and engineering degree programs, whatever be the credentials of the student’s education.

So, go ahead and apply in some of the leading engineering institutes in the country. You will benefit a great deal, and will equip yourself with a solid degree in engineering. Along with academics, you will also learn a lot about the country and the culture.
