That’s a little strange when you think about it, because the material is really the thing doing all the work. A printer is just a delivery mechanism. The material decides whether the final part can survive a car crash, sit inside someone’s body, or hold up an airplane wing. And that’s basically the story of where the 3D printing material market has been heading lately — away from novelty, toward parts that actually have to perform.

Healthcare Is Quietly a Big DealIf you’d told me five years ago that hospitals would be routinely using 3D-printed implants and custom prosthetics, I’d have assumed that was still years off. It’s not. Biocompatible materials have improved enough that this is normal now in a lot of places, not experimental.

Who’s Actually Buying This StuffAerospace, automotive, healthcare, electronics — the usual suspects. But construction is worth watching. A few companies are already printing structural building components, which could pull material demand in directions the industry hasn’t really planned for yet.
On the geography side, Asia-Pacific has become a manufacturing hotspot for additive production, mostly for cost reasons. North America and Europe still lead on developing the actual new materials, at least for now.
