Making a house of your own on your own land is not an easy task in Australia. Here, you need to be a certified individual with enough knowledge about safety and durability before you can embark on to the project.

The maximum amount of what one saves during a lifetime goes for making a home. These statistics are true for people across the globe; only the price one has to pay differs. Generally, one prefers to have a ready made apartment or flat that is prepared at the least possible time, with certain facilities available for all the dwellers. But the problem is deeper for those having lands or properties of their own. In today’s world, if there is land available, one prefers to build a house on it rather than going in for farming.

In NSW, in order to build your own house on your own land, one has to acquire an owner builder certificate by undergoing a proper semi-academic course. The basic objective is to make the builder aware of the technical needs for making a house. This results in not only making the house safe and sound but also ensuring that people do not get hurt or injured during the construction.

The knowledge required to build a house is available with a civil engineer or an architect who has the required set of skills, but for a owner builder, he/she has to acquire the knowledge separately. One may have to undergo a proper academic course of a few months before getting the Sydney owner builder licence that can enable her/him to make their own home in and around the city.

Course Contents

These courses are available online from ownerbuildercentre.com.au. This website offers training related to owner builder courses, both online and through correspondence, making sure that one passes the exam at ease to acquire the licence certificate. It takes a less amount of time and also the costs are much lower as compared to the correspondence courses that include sharing of study materials in hard copies. The correspondence courses are thus charged higher than the online courses.

The courses generally include five general modules that cover:-

  • Vendor management skills
  • Information on occupational health hazards
  • Technical drawing
  • Costing and Estimation
  • Legal implications of a contract

Eligibility

Those who are adults (above 18 years of age), has their own land or at least partially owns a land and are intending to stay in the home built, are eligible for undertaking the courses and getting a license.

Pre-requisite

Before acquiring a Sydney owner builder licence, one needs to have a White Card too. It is nothing but a very short term diploma equivalent, that makes sure one has the basic orientation to undergo a full course that is related to civil and construction works.

Owner Builder Center has owner builder licences that also help in acquiring a White Card. In fact, they offer quite a few packages that include both the White Card and the owner builder licences offered by them at discounted rates.
