Field Signs That Show Trichoderma harzianum Has Successfully Colonised the Root Zone

Applying a beneficial microorganism is only the first step. Farmers and growers also need to know whether it has established around the roots and is contributing to plant health.

Trichoderma harzianum is a beneficial fungus used in agriculture, horticulture, nurseries and gardening. Suitable strains can colonise the root surface and nearby soil, interact with plants and help suppress certain soil-borne pathogens. However, successful colonisation cannot usually be identified through one visible sign alone.

The most reliable field assessment involves comparing treated plants with untreated plants under similar conditions. Here are the main signs farmers should observe.

1. More Fine Roots and Lateral Root Development

One of the clearest indirect signs is a change in root structure. Carefully remove a few treated plants without breaking the roots and wash away the soil gently.

Successfully treated plants may show:

  • More lateral roots
  • A greater number of fine feeder roots
  • Improved root spread
  • Higher root density
  • Better exploration of the surrounding soil

In a controlled study on red kidney bean, pre-inoculation with Trichoderma harzianum reduced the incidence and severity of Fusarium root rot while increasing root length, shoot length and total dry biomass.

Field performance will vary according to the pathogen, crop, strain, application rate, soil environment and timing. Therefore, Trichoderma should be included in an integrated disease-management programme rather than treated as an emergency cure.

5. More Uniform Plant Establishment

Successful root colonisation may produce a more even crop stand. Treated plants may establish at a similar rate, with fewer weak or severely stunted plants across the row.

  • Leaf number
  • Stem strength
  • Canopy uniformity
  • Root and shoot weight
  • Percentage of surviving plants

Uniformity is often more useful than judging one unusually vigorous plant. Examine several plants from different areas of the treated plot.

6. Better Growth Under Moderate Stress

Plants with healthier root systems may recover more effectively after transplanting or periods of limited moisture. Possible field signs include less temporary wilting, continued production of new leaves and faster recovery after irrigation resumes.

This effect should not be confused with drought immunity. Trichoderma harzianum cannot replace proper irrigation, drainage or crop-specific water management. Root-zone colonisation may support the plant, but severe or prolonged stress can still reduce performance.

7. Lower Disease Pressure in Treated Rows

A practical method is to maintain a small untreated comparison strip. Record disease incidence separately in treated and untreated sections.

A tomato field study found that plants treated with selected Trichoderma harzianum isolates showed reduced disease incidence along with improvements in growth and yield-related measurements. Microscopy also confirmed fungal growth on the root surface.

This shows why visual crop performance should be supported by planned comparisons rather than assumptions.

How to Check the Root Zone in the Field

Select five to ten plants from the treated area and the same number from an untreated area. Choose plants of similar age and growing conditions.

Carefully dig around each plant, remove the complete root system and wash the roots. Compare root length, branching, fresh root growth, discolouration and rotting. Record plant height, survival and visible disease symptoms.

Repeat the assessment after seven to fourteen days. Consistent improvement across several plants provides stronger evidence than a single observation.

Visible Signs Are Not Laboratory Confirmation

Stronger roots, better growth and lower disease pressure are indirect indicators. They do not prove that the applied strain has colonised the roots.

Scientific confirmation may involve fungal re-isolation, colony-forming-unit counts, microscopy or molecular testing. In tomato research, colonisation was confirmed by counting Trichoderma in the rhizosphere and allowing it to grow from surface-sterilised root tissue.
