There is an ngo for children that believe that no child should have to choose between food and education. This NGO's name is The Akshaya Patra Foundation. Established in the year 2000, this organisation provides the mid-day meal programme in Government schools to fulfil its vision that 'No child in India shall be deprived of education because of hunger'. Staring with feeding just 1,500 children across 5 schools when its first kitchen was opened in Bangalore, today the Foundation feeds over 1.4 million children every day through its kitchens set up in 24 locations of India. Though the organisation has reached out to so many children in the last 15 years, the Foundation is determined to achieve its mission of feeding 5 million children by 2020. To support this charity donation from interested parties is crucial.

This ngo for children provides food for education through its specialized kitchens across the country. Akshaya Patra follows two kitchen models in its operations: the centralised and the decentralised kitchens. The centralised kitchens are highly mechanised operations which are fitted with state-of-the-art cooking equipment. This allows the Foundation to undertake large scale cooking in an efficient manner without any loss of hygiene, quality or food safety. Most of the organisation's centralised kitchens can cater to about 100,000 meals in a day. The organisation has two decentralised kitchens, these have been constructed in remote locations where road connectivity and infrastructure are a problem. These kitchens are run by local self-help groups trained by Akshaya Patra personnel. In order to keep growing as a charity donation is what the Foundation needs to bring more children under the umbrella of the programme.

As an ngo for children Akshaya Patra has had tremendous impact on the lives of the mid-day meal programme beneficiaries. Besides providing them with tasty, nutritious food every day, the Foundation has also provided the students and their parents a reason to send the children to school. Understanding this link between food and education has been crucial towards mending the situation. Record shows better health, school enrolment, classroom attendance, more social skills, better retention and concentration and much more among children. The mid-day meal programme has also helped the children believe in the possibility of escaping from their cycle of illiteracy and hunger, and take hope in having a brighter future.
