Distribution Transformer: The Unsung Hero Of Electrical Distribution System
Posted: May 08, 2015
Every time you use electricity at home, say thanks to this small but powerful guy. He is the one converting high voltages running through the power lines into the useful electricity that we use at home. You might be wondering who this little chap is? He is none other than our Distribution Transformer. These Transformers have been around for over 100 years now and they are here to stay. Now for the technical description, a Distribution Transformer is designed to reduce the primary voltage of an electric system to the level used by end users. The Transformer is a static device which transfers electric power by electromagnetic induction. Generally small in size, it is filled with insulating oil.
Let us explore the world of Distribution Transformers:
The construction of a Distribution Transformer
There are two types of construction namely core type and shell type. In core type construction, a rectangular frame forms the core and it is surrounded by coils on the two vertical sides. On the other hand in shell type construction, the core surrounds the coil instead of the coil surrounding the core.
Distribution Transformer Ratings
The amount of current continuously carried at the rated voltage without exceeding the design temperature defines the capability of a Transformer. These Transformers can easily withstand overloads.
Uses of Distribution Transformers
The Transformers are extensively used in fields like:
- Transmission lines
- Telecommunications
- Paper and steel industry
- Data processing equipment
- Radar systems
- Photocopying machines
- Tool machines
- Safety alarm and lighting plants
- Test control and measuring systems
- Sensitive electrical or electronic equipment
Special Purpose Distribution Transformer
Different types of Special Purpose Distribution Transformer are made available by Distribution Transformer Manufacturers in Chandigarh India. Some of them are listed below:
- Isolation Transformers
These Transformers transfer electrical power from a source to a device. During the transfer the device is completely isolated from the power source by the isolation Transformer.
- Furnace duty Transformers
Highly acclaimed for their sturdy construction, reliable performance and low maintenances, these Transformers are widely used in steel and casting companies.
Being an indispensible part of the electrical distribution systems, different types of Distribution Transformers are available like High Voltage Distribution Transformer, Special Purpose Distribution Transformer, Heavy Duty Distribution Transformer, etc. Even though these Transformers are designed for different applications but there basic working principle is the same.
