When it comes to kitchen sinks, hygiene is an important factor. This because aside of food preparation, a kitchen sink also deals with daily grime of dish washing, muddy boots and even the pet dog. To learn how to keep your kitchen sink free from germs and grime, follow our guide.

Stainless Steel Sinks

Stainless steel sinks are the most popular type of kitchen sink. And that for great reason. They are the easiest to maintain. Hot soapy water or a quality kitchen cleaner is all you need to get the job done. A quick spray and a wipe over the sink and you are good to go.

While stainless steel sinks are resistant to chemicals, you should avoid bleaches that contain hypochlorite. In addition, there are certain foods that if left for long periods can lead pitting and even corrosion. Vinegar, salt, fruit juices, pickles, mayonnaise and pickles are few examples.

Ceramic Sinks

Aside of hard wearing, ceramic sinks are extremely resistant to chemicals and heat. To keep them clean, you can use most cleaners – including mild abrasives. But in most of the cases, hot soapy water works well. Avoid metallic scrubbers because they can leave gray marks. Pans and cutlery can also cause gray marks, but a mild abrasive cleaner can remove them.

Avoid using strong chemicals and alkaline on a ceramic sink including ammonia, brush cleaners, caustic soda and nail varnish removers as they can damage the glaze.

Composite Sinks

Composite sinks are durable and resilient. They usually contain high concentration of real granite particles which gives the sink numerous beneficial properties. But as granite is a natural product, there are things you should follow to keep it as its best condition.

The most appropriate way to clean these sinks is by washing them down with soap and warm water – ideally after each use. Wipe the surface with a clean soft cloth. If limescale deposits build up occurs, you can use a cleaning product specially designed to break down limescale. Simple spray the cleaning product on and leave it for two minutes. Rinse well.

Grey marks leaved by aluminum pans can be easily removed with a mild abrasive. Strong chemical and alkalies should also be avoided in composite sinks.

By taking a well care of your kitchen sink, it will be there to serve you and your family for many years to come.
