Many enterprises have embraced mobile apps for work-related processes and functions. Traditionally enterprises has been outsourcing their mobile app development projects to expert mobile application development companies. However, in response to changing market conditions, enterprises are trying real hard to bring in-house software application development back in fashion. Enterprises does this to facilitate their ever growing needs of customization and their customer's ever changing requirements due to technological advancements.

Enterprise computing has transformed dramatically over the last 30 years -- from the mainframe to the client-server model and now to the cloud. Much of the disruption has come from agile startups who have leveraged cheap infrastructure, storage, networking and open source technology to run their businesses with software at the core.

Tying license management for enterprise apps with app stores

As more and more enterprises accelerate their adoption of enterprise mobile apps, enterprise app stores, will expand beyond that of simply providing employee access to company apps. The utility of these self-service stores will expand enormously.

IT will find that app stores are a perfect place to join different and separately managed systems, such as mobile and desktop application management. App stores will also be used to enable practical license management by tying application requests into existing Software License Optimization processes, and allowing employees to partner with IT in managing application usage, reclaiming unused applications, and minimizing waste.

Native applications will be embraced by enterprises

According to CEO of Accellion, an app development company, "There will be more importance given to cater the needs of the mobile user this year, which I think will be the year of the enterprise mobile applications." The IBM/Apple partnership and HP's push into the mobility market demonstrate the potential of this market. So far, the apps developed for enterprise usage were merely a mobile skin on existing desktop solutions. However, in the year 2015 enterprises will be looking to develop new, native applications that take true benefits of the mobile device form factor and unique mobile features to develop streamlined business processes.

Shift towards a more collaborative approach

"The enterprise mobile app development will take a more collaborative approach in the year 2015," according to Cathal McGloin, vice president of Mobile Platforms at Red Hat. This is partly in response to the increased number and difficulty of mobile app projects that will need to be managed by businesses, but is also a reflection of the iterative nature of mobile app development and the need to speed it up and make it more cost-effective. A typical mobile app project can involve several different developer skills, the acceptance of more component-based approaches to app development will create the need to provide more detailed access control: locking-down functionality and securing sensitive components.

Enterprise mobile apps will support infrastructures and architectures

As organizations grow beyond point solutions, the focus will move to the underlying architectures that support quickness and steadiness of mobile projects. As the cloud-based mobile application platforms will be embraced by organizations, we hope to see Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS) grow enormously as well. PaaS vendors will be able to offer a broad set of enterprise services. PaaS and mobile as traditional middleware could be offered as a true application platform "as-a-Service" that can run across the public cloud, private cloud and the on-premise data center.
