The water between two familiar Places

There are places you can visit so often that you stop thinking about how to get there. You know the road, the turns, the parking lot and probably even the spot where you usually stop for a drink. On the water, it can feel a little different. You may know where you are leaving from and where you are going, but the stretch in between has a way of becoming its own part of the trip.

At first, you are usually thinking about the place you are heading to. Maybe it is another dock, a restaurant, a friend's place, or just somewhere you have been before. The destination is what gets the attention. Then the boat keeps moving and, somewhere along the way, you realize you have stopped thinking about it.

The water between those two places starts to become interesting on its own.

A shoreline changes slowly as you pass it. A house appears, then disappears behind the trees. A small dock that looked like nothing from far away becomes much easier to see. You might pass the same channel marker you have seen many times and suddenly notice something about it that you never paid attention to before.

There is also something about traveling between familiar places by Saltwater Pontoon boats that makes distance feel different. Two places might seem close when you look at them from land, but the route on the water takes its own shape. You follow the open water, work around the shoreline and sometimes take a path that you would never think about if you were looking at a road map.

The best part is that nobody has to be doing anything special. The boat is moving, the water is passing underneath, and the people aboard are talking about whatever happens to come up. Someone may point out a house. Someone else might recognize a boat they have seen before. A conversation starts and ends without anyone remembering how it began.

Eventually the destination comes closer. The dock becomes easier to recognize, and the trip between the two familiar places is almost over. But sometimes that middle part is what stays in your mind afterward.

You started at one familiar place and ended at another. Nothing unusual happened along the way. Still, for a little while, the water between them became a place you noticed instead of simply passing through.

Maybe that is one of the small pleasures of traveling by speed boat. The distance between two places does not have to be empty space. Sometimes it becomes part of where you went.
