All that you need to know about Madras Institute of Technology

The Madras Institute of Technology (MIT), located in Chromepat, Chennai, is a premiere engineering college in India and one of the only four autonomous colleges of the Anna University. It was established in 1949 as the first self-sponsored college of the country and was later collaborated with Anna University.
Also, it was the first college in India to offer a Masters in Avionics and Mechatronics. They have a peculiar system of student mentoring by their seniors known as "T-Series". The college has a brilliant course program for aeronautics, automobile and electrical engineering and the college experiences a rapid filling up of the seats for these courses during the counselling sessions. To acquire the best minds for this reason, the college imposes high cut-offs for these courses and consequently, the students learning these particular courses are exceptionally brilliant.
The former President of India, A. P. J. Abdul Kalam is an alumnus of this college. It can only reiterate what a brilliant college it is to have such eminent personalities as its alumnus.
As the MIT is affiliated to the Anna University, it has the typical hierarchical structure with a Chancellor, a Vice-Chancellor, and a registrar. The dean is the head of the institute and takes care of day to day activities. Also, the Head of the Departments are heading the particular departments in the college.
Madras Institute of Technology follows the credit system where each course is awarded marks in the form of credits, and they have 3 credits per course. This way, the students have a total score and their cumulative grade point average is calculated (CGPA). Based on their performance in their examinations, the students have a CGPA and the maximum CGPA wick can be awarded is 10.
Students can get admission to this college by taking the Tamil Nadu Engineering Admissions examination. Along with the entrance test, till 2006, the score of the candidate in their higher secondary examination was also an important factor while securing admission to this college.
The college has 4 student organizations. They make sure that there is holistic development of the college students. They do not just want to make bookworms, but all rounders. Athenaeum is the general student organization to make sure that all administration work goes well. They also make sure of the extracurricular activities going in the college are good for the development of the student. The other 3 bodies are:
- Computer Society
- Personality Development Association
- Rotary Club
A notable feature of the college is the MIT Museum. It is an archive where all the great works done throughout the college are strode. All photographs of events, various trophies, and many other artefacts. The museum also houses a replica of a glider made by the students of the 1952 batch. It is literally a walk down memory lane for the alums.
