A very famous Japanese entrepreneur once came to a high end hotel to conduct a workshop. Until the end, nobody realized the subject matter of the event and thought it to be a complete waste of time. Halfway through, the hotel employees gathered what the workshop was on and they were already learning quite a bit from it. The speaker did not in any way sound like an established entrepreneur with over a decade’s success to his credit. His advice, although practically very well demonstrated greatly stressed on healthy communication and immediate execution. Something as straightforward as switching unused chambers to laundry could be done within the hour of its determination. Dish stands could be introduced within minutes through urgent orders to make the kitchen well organized. The ‘Do it now’ attitude is truly responsible for progressive development. When I realized this, my aspirations for becoming a citizen developer through UAB Online grew stronger.

In the Masters program offered by the institute, citizen developer was one of the designations for which information technology students were being trained. In sessions concerning this designation, the speaker showed us info graphics depicting the importance of having a citizen developer in an IT firm. The first few graphic images were completely devoted to hard facts showing the decline of productivity due to lack of expertise. This serves as a severe setback to firms attempting to expand their business because there is little or no scope for further development. The UAB Online info graphic made me realize how far from actual progress we were, with the exception of top IT firms that had managed to set trends in this sector.

It was all the more shocking to discover that only a small portion of the information systems (IS) employees actually knew how to operate such tools. What was even harsher was to face the fact that every company on an average faced a setback of about 20% in terms of productivity, which meant losses in millions! I attempted to calculate the average loss per annum and almost fainted at the figures that came about. UAB Online had brought to light many facts that most of us IT students were hardly aware of.

With such poor figures of productivity, it seemed evident that citizen developers were required to step in. There is a dire need for user-friendly business applications to suit the conveniences of maximum number of employees. Not much time can be afforded in training, as this would mean the utilization of additional resources. Some companies may not even have a budget for the same. As a result, it makes more sense to hire one developer in a department of say fifteen people and about five in a department of about forty. Looking at the pay, job opportunities, and progressive choices in this designation, I became thoroughly determined to take it up in future. It may come as a shock to people but all this was pursued online from a reputed business school! With the convenience of studying from home, I bagged a Masters in IS without much of an effort.
