Cataract is an eye disease in which loss of vision occurs due to lens turning opaque or cloudy. It is generally a slow process and commonly seen in older people. The primary cause because of which the lens becomes opaque is changes taking place in protein structures of lens. In cataract the patient however does not face any kind of difficulties like redness or pain in the eye.

Common Symptoms

In the early stages the patient hardly faces any vision problems and symptoms tend to vary according to the location where cataract occurs. Some of the common locations include cortical, nuclear, sub-capsular and posterior. Normally some of the symptoms which will indicate that a person has cataract would include:

  • Blurry, double vision or cloudy vision.
  • Diminishing color vibrancy which results in images appearing to have yellowish tint.
  • Difficulty in reading due to reduction in contrast between the letters and backgrounds.
  • Problem driving at night due to increased sensitivity to light resulting in glare.
  • Pupil turning yellowish or milky and patient can only distinguish between light and dark.

Benefits of Cataract Operation

Cataract surgery in Mumbai is the most effective method for correcting this eye problem. In this operation the natural defective lens is replaced using another artificial lens. Let us now look at the different types of operations that are available for this problem.

Types of Operations

There are two types of operations that are performed; first is called Phacoemulsification while the other is known as extracapsular surgery.

Phaco: In this operation the surgeon makes a small incision on cornea and from that incision a probe is inserted. The work of this probe is to generate ultrasound waves which in turn break the lens into small parts. The lens is then taken out with the help of suction.

Extracapsular Operation: In this type of surgery the surgeon makes a large incision on cornea and through it the lens is taken out. This procedure is generally used in case the lens is extremely hard.

Post-operative Recovery

The best thing about cataract surgery in Mumbai is that it takes very less time and the recovery period is also very short. You will regain blurry vision immediately after the operation completes and it will continue to further recover in the following days.

By the time you are into next week you will find that distance vision has improved significantly but it will take some more time for your near vision to become normal. Generally by the 3rd week you will be able to properly view nearby object and the blurred vision will also get corrected.

Care after Operation

Generally, people have itchy sensation after the operation and they will also feel discomfort in the eye. But apart from that there will not be any other problems that patient will have to face. In the recovery period you will also have light as well as touch sensitivity in the eye.

Your surgeon will normally prescribe a drop to reduce probability of any infection as well as speed up the recovery process.
