Network management is important to practices in command and control practices and is managed through a network operation center. Network operators are responsible for monitoring network operations and troubleshooting for any issues that could lead to downtime and customer inconvenience. Network operations can be characterized by FCAPS – fault, configuration, accounting, performance and security.

System Functions

The functions of a Network Management System include planning, controlling, deploying allocating, monitoring and coordinating the varied resources of a network. The components include

  • Identifying the devices present on the network
  • Monitoring the devices to assess the health of the network
  • Tracking performance indicators such as bandwidth, utilization, packet loss and latency.
  • Intelligent notifications that will respond to specific network scenarios by paging, emailing, calling or texting a network administrator.

Network Management Tools

The Network Management System comprises of tools that monitor the performance, calculates bandwidth utilization and scans the traffic for errors through SNMP. These include

  • Switch Port Mapper: Helps to identify the switch port with a device is connected
  • Bandwidth Monitor: Provides a graphical view of rea- time traffic in a switch or router.
  • Wake on LAN: Turns on a machine that is present in the network but not alive.
  • Network Monitor: Generates an email alert based on severity.
  • System Explorer: Scans a SNMP-enabled device to assess performance details, such as system snapshot, CPU usage, etc.
  • TCP Reset: Lists all the TCP connections that are established in a device. The administrator can then verify the connections and reset the unauthorized connections.
  • System Detail Update: Allows the administrator to update system details such as system name, description and location in a range of devices.

Functionality of network management

Networks are typically composed of platforms from different vendors and therefore operators are required to learn a range of command languages in order to perform operations. NOCVue is a software product that makes it easy for operators to communicate either within networks (elements) or between networks from different vendors. The software provides real-time information, allowing for troubleshooting and adjustments to network operations. The software is an out-of-the-box solution for large networks and is used by OEM’s, service providers and IT departments to improve network management and performance.
