New Subaru WRX STi Revealed for Global RallyCross 2015

While many are awaiting the start of the Red Bull 2015 Global RallyCross, new excitement has been generated with the reveal of the new Subaru participant. This new variant of the Subaru WRX has been built by Vermont SportsCar and has been officially named as the VT15x. This Subaru WRX STi model features a 2.0 litre turbocharged Boxer engine capable of delivering 580 horsepower. In the typical rear wheel drive Subaru WRX STI Premium vehicle will be paired with a Sadev six speed sequential transmission. This powerful combination allows the VT15x to hit zero to 96 kilometres or sixty miles per hour in just two seconds in a variety of different road conditions and surfaces.

The new VT15x has a number of braking, suspension and chassis improvements compared to the VR14x model it is replacing. This should ensure that the new competition car is even more capable. These modifications have improved the aerodynamics putting the extra power to even more effective use.

The third generation VT15x is said to have a more optimised centre of gravity, improved weight balance and revised suspension geometry. Since the USA Subaru Rally Team claimed five Global RallyCross podium places last season, including an X Games silver medal and an outright win in the Seattle round, these developments should excite rally race fans.

The new VT15x Subaru WRX will be piloted again by Bucky Lasek and Sverre Isachsen. Travis Pastrana will be joining the team for selected rounds and the X Games. According to marketing manager for Subaru Motorsports, Rob Weir, STI is increasing support in the United States rallycross efforts. The expertise and developmental resources available will allow Subaru to take their program to an even higher level of competitiveness. Weir has stated that the confidence levels within the Subaru team is high and the camp believe that they have a "winning package" of both faster cars and talented drivers. While the 2014 goal was to get to the front row for each final and make it onto the podium, the 2015 goal is to win. The RallyCross season begins on the 31st May 2015, kicking off at Lauderdale, Florida.

However, even non race fans should take note of the Subaru WRX developments for the RallyCross. Chances are that these developments may find themselves into next generation Subaru WRX STi models in the future. Since the Subaru WRX STi Premium models are marketed as a performance vehicle, it is likely that driving enthusiasts will be looking at the RallyCross performance to see the possibilities for the future.
