Ovarian cyst in women- what is it and how is it caused, treatments available

Ovaries are the part of women reproductive system located in the lower abdomen uterus. The ovaries have the function of producing eggs in women along with hormones like estrogen and progesterone. The ovarian cyst is known to develop at least on lifetime of every woman. Cysts are fluid filled sacs that develop on the ovaries. Mostly there is no pain and symptom of ovarian cyst witnessed. Still it is important that you are aware of what ovarian cyst is and when it is necessary to seek treatment.

Types of Ovarian Cysts

Ovarian cysts are of many kinds such as endometrioma cysts and dermoid cysts. But the most common types of cysts are the functional cysts called corpus luteum and follicle cysts.

Follicle Cyst

Commonly during the menstrual cycle in a woman the egg is produced inside a sac in ovaries. This sac is filled with fluid and breaks to release egg on maturity. Sometimes however the follicle or sac may not break open causing formation of a cyst on the ovary.

Corpus Luteum Cysts

After releasing the egg the follicle sac dissolves. However in some cases the follicle does not dissolves and additional fluid accumulated inside the sac causing cyst formation.

There are some other kinds of cysts as well like dermoid cysts, cystadenomas and endometriomas.

The Symptoms

Often there will not be any symptoms of Ovarian Cyst present. But as the cyst starts growing the symptoms can become common. Some symptoms you need to take care of include:

  • Swelling of abdomen or bloating
  • Painful intercourse
  • Painful bowel movements
  • Breast tenderness
  • Pelvic pain during or before menstrual cycle
  • Lower back pain
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting

These are common symptoms but there can be some severe symptoms as well. These can include:

  • Sharp pelvic pain
  • Dizziness or Faintness
  • Fever
  • Rapid breathing

These symptoms can be result of complications due to untreated ovarian cysts. Make sure you seek immediate medical advice as soon as you witness any of these symptoms.

Treatment

Commonly cyst should dissolve on its own. However if this does not happens then it can grow larger. Treatment required to remove cysts can include:

Birth Control Pills

In women suffering from recurrent ovarian cysts doctors can advice use of oral contraceptives. They stop the ovulation of eggs which help in preventing new cyst development. These contraceptives also help in reducing risks of ovarian cancer.

Laparoscopy

If you are not suffering from cancer and the cyst is small in size your doctor can perform laparoscopy to surgically remove cyst. It is a common procedure and do not involves any complication.

Laparotomy

Another common procedure is to perform laparotomy to remove larger cysts. A large incision is made in your abdomen and immediate biopsy is conducted by doctor to remove the cyst. Hysterectomy can be advised if doctor finds your cysts to be cancerous.

You should not panic as in most cases ovarian cysts are not dangerous. Go for medical consultation and you will easily able to deal with cysts.
