2016 Buick Cascada
Posted: May 25, 2015
In what has been described as a mass re-interest in the luxury convertible market, automotive manufacturers have gone back to the drawing boards in an attempt to design the types of sexy, head-turning drop-tops demanded by their target demographics. Into this foray comes Buick with the 2016 Cascada, marketed by General Motors as a dynamic, stylish convertible that utilizes innovative powertrain and chassis technologies to complement the sassy vehicle’s driving experience.
Perhaps most eye-opening of all is the fact that when it goes on sale in early 2016, the Cascada will be the first Buick convertible to be offered in North America in some 25 years, and the latest globally developed vehicle to join the brand’s aggressively evolving portfolio. Be that as it may, if the average two-door convertible is the classic black dress, the Buick Cascada is a low-cut sexy little number, destined to draw envious stares from its dramatic profile alone.
This flowing, sculpted profile — boasting fast-raked A-pillars that beckon a wind-in-the-hair experience — reflects a convertible-from-the-ground-up design motif. In other words, unlike many convertibles based on coupe counterparts, the Cascada was designed from the outset to be a drop-top. In another touch of intrigue on behalf of Buick, the top cooperates when lowered, folding neatly and completely beneath a hard tonneau behind the rear seats. This provides, say Buick representatives, a pure open-air aesthetic and a perfect, seamless profile when the top is closed.
Appearing windswept and aerodynamically sultry, the Cascada’s exterior design is further accentuated with a nearly head-to-tail body side line and sleek, modern headlamps that flow into the front fenders. Adding even more personality to this pretty face are Buick’s signature wing-shaped light-emitting diode (LED) daytime running lights, delivering not only a distinctive appearance but a head-turning one as well. In the back, a chrome trim bridges the wing-shaped tail lamps, which are also LED-illuminated.
Buick fitted the car with a HiPer Strut front suspension and responsive Watts Z-link suspension in the rear, all of which complements the 200-horsepower turbocharged engine. The 1.6-liter turbocharged powerplant boasts more than 100 horsepower per liter, making it one of the most power-dense engines in the Cascada’s segment. Delivering stump-tugging torque estimated at 206 lb.-ft., the engine also boasts an overboost feature that pushes torque in brief segments to an estimated 221 lb.-ft.
Adding to the Cascada driving experience and the turbo engine’s efficient performance is a direct injection system with variable valve timing, backed by a buttery-smooth six-speed automatic transmission. Steering inputs are executed by a fuel-saving, rack-mounted electric power steering system, while the job of stopping the stylish Cascada is handled by standard four-wheel antilock disc brakes, visible to the enthusiast onlooker just beyond the standard and stunning 20-inch wheels.
Open the sweeping door of the Cascada and a thoughtfully trimmed and comprehensively appointed cabin greets the driver, reflecting Buick’s renaissance and boasting an instrument panel that is wrapped with soft-touch materials including authentic stitching. Meanwhile, heated front seats and steering wheel add a thoughtful touch for colder weather environments.
In the areas of safety and technology, the 2016 Buick Cascada comes fully loaded with lane departure warning, rear park assist, rearview camera, Rainsense windshield wipers, rollover protection behind the rear seats, electronic rear-entry system, OnStar 4G LTE with built-in Wi-Fi hotspot and Buick IntelliLink with seven-inch color touchscreen featuring text message alerts, Siri Eyes Free for Apple phones with an iOS 6 or newer operating system and navigation.
As a convertible, the Cascada boasts an electro-hydraulic power roof system that features multilayer construction, including acoustic and thermal barriers that allow this incredible luxury cruiser to deliver a comfortable ride in a multitude of conditions.
From a rigid body structure featuring high-strength steel injected in strategic areas to a wheelbase that enhances ride smoothness while enabling greater rear-seat legroom, the 2016 Buick Cascada is destined to enter the esteemed realm of "most sophisticated convertibles." Couple that with its myriad of aggressive styling elements, eye-opening performance numbers and value-rich standard equipment list, and General Motors may just have the next big thing on their hands.
