One of the major benefit of CSR in India
Posted: May 26, 2015
India has become an industrial hub in the recent past and more and more companies have set up their base in the country. Not only has this added to the spurt in economy of the country, but it has also created several employment opportunities for the Indian youth. Besides this, to ensure the upliftment of the community, the Indian government has made it mandatory for corporates to set aside 2 per cent of their profits for community development activities through Corporate Social Responsibility or CSR.
CSR is a very broad term which is used to describe a wide variety of activities that these corporates are supposed to undertake. While several of these corporates undertake CSR activities directly, there are several others who tie up with different non government organisations to achieve this end. CSR has its own benefits and this is why several companies go to a long extent to undertake these activities.
One of the major benefit of CSR in India is that it promotes community development. There are several companies who train the local population in different skills to help them make a living or find employment. This helps in community involvement. The community benefits from the profits of the company and grows along with it.
Another benefit the CSR foundation of India brings with it is that by undertaking CSR, a company can project a better brand image. Brand image has a direct impact on the consumers and clients of the company, which means a company with a better brand image will have a better business. Apart from the marketing and advertising strategies that companies undertake to improve brand image, CSR can play a major role in enhancing it.
Through CSR, companies also get to connect with the local community. This is particularly important for multinational companies that set up base in remote locations. This helps them in achieving inclusive growth and fight feelings of antagonism or resentment among the locals. Through CSR, they help the community grow along with them and establish an understanding with them.
NGOs play an important role in implementing CSR activities at the ground level. This is because they have better access to the community. Also, the level of understanding of NGO workers of the local community is much better. Plus, they take different approaches and methods to help the community on behalf of the corporates in an efficient manner.
This symbiotic relationship has helped in the development of communities across the length and breadth of the nation. There are several Indian and international NGOs that are working with corporates to implement CSR activities at the grassroots level.
