eIQ Energy, the developer of proprietary Parallel Solar power-management technology, has entered an agreement to be an industry partner in the Open Solar Outdoors Test Field (OSOTF), a Canadian research initiative that will create open-source data on real-world performance of a photovoltaic array under varying weather conditions. The OSOTF, based at St. Lawrence College's Kingston, Ontario, campus, is a fully grid-connected test system. The performance of its 95 PV modules is being correlated with a wide range of meteorological measurements to provide new levels of insight into array operations, according to eIQ. The project is a partnership of the Sustainable Energy Applied Research Center at St.

Lawrence College and the Applied Sustainability Group at Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario. The array utilizes eIQ Energy's vBoost DC-to-DC converter modules rather than traditional series-string wiring. This approach provides researchers with the ability to isolate each individual module on the bus and identify its specific performance characteristics, the company says. Because each module operates independently of those around it, each can be measured on its individual merits.Future experiments will explore novel system layouts, low-level concentration and the effects of spectral composition on solar cell performance. All data and analyses will be made available to the worldwide photovoltaic community and the general public.

Solar Rainbow Services, an East Rutherford, N.J.-based designer and installer of large-scale solar electric systems, has formed a residential division after a first year of installing exclusively commercial projects. With the addition of residential installations, Solar Rainbow anticipates hiring five new employees.Presently, Solar Rainbow has 6 MW worth of solar projects currently under construction and an additional pipeline of about 30 MW of commercial rooftop installations.

SolarReserve, a Santa Monica, Calif.-headquartered developer of large-scale solar power projects, says the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has offered the company a conditional commitment for a $737 million loan guarantee for the 110 MW Crescent Dunes Solar Energy Project to be built in Tonopah, Nev.According to the company, the DOE loan guarantee offer is a critical step in the progress of this landmark project, with construction slated for this summer and the start of operations in late 2013.Electricity from the project, which will use SolarReserve's molten-salt power-tower technology, will be sold to NV Energy under a long-term power purchase agreement approved by the Nevada Public Utilities Commission in 2010.

On the 10th anniversary of its founding, Berlin, Germany-based thin-film PV manufacturer Sulfurcell has renamed itself Soltecture. The name change is designed to reflect the company's evolution into offering integrated solar products."With the renaming, we are signaling and underlining the development of the company from module manufacturer to a provider of optimum integrated PV system solutions," says CEO and founder Dr. Nikolaus Meyer.Since the end of 2008, Soltecture has been working on second-generation technology, which deploys a copper indium sulfide layer based on selenium instead of sulfur.

In the laboratory, this technology has been proven to yield the highest efficiencies in the thin-film space, according to Soltecture. The modules can be produced using the same equipment as the company's sulfur-based cells, with the exception of machinery for the coating process.Soltecture notes that it now also offers standardized solutions for the integration of thin-film modules into roofs and facades, and in other applications. For more information?1500va ups
