Soups are the ultimate comfort soup for cold and flu. Warm, filling, and soothing, a good bowl of soup can cure the hunger pangs at a time when ingesting any solid food seems to scratch your throat.

Sometimes, you need more than a cup of ginger tea to salvage you from the attack of a merciless cold. You have a runny nose, slight headache, and the ever so irritating feeling in the throat that refuses to subside even after the tenth Vicks pill. Worse of all, any solid going into your stomach has to pass that valley of thorns inside your neck. Chicken Corn Soup:

Nothing can be more cliché. But it is so because it works. It has anti-inflammatory practices and works as an immune-booster as well. The corn gives ample dietary fibre.

Recipe for Chicken Corn Soup:

Ingredients:

1 litre Chicken stock30 gm Chicken breast150 gm Corn kernels boiled and mashed into a pulp25 gm crushed Garlic25 gm Fresh coriander2 tbsp Cumin seeds5 gm Turmeric30 gm OilSalt to taste

Method:

Heat oil in a deep pan and the cumin seeds. As the seeds crackle, add the garlic, turmeric and sauté. Add in the corn paste and cook until it starts leaving oil. Pour in the chicken stock and cook while stirring all the while. Adjust the salt. Garnish with chopped coriander and cooked chicken shreds. Serve hot.

Carrot and Beetroot Soup:

Filled with anti-oxidants and beta carotene, the soup works wonders to strengthen your immunity system.

Recipe for Carrot and Beetroot Soup:

Ingredients:

300 gm Carrot300 gm Beet root4-5 Bay leaves2 tbsp chopped green chilies20 gm chopped Ginger20 gm Fresh coriander20 ml Oil1 tbsp cumin seeds750 ml WaterSalt to taste

Method:

Heat oil in a pan. Add cumin seeds and bay leaves. When the seeds start to crackle, add ginger. Sauté for a minute. Add the carrot and beetroot cut into small pieces along with the chilies. Cook for 5 minutes. Add water and let it come to a boil. Strain the water and make a puree of the cooked veggies. Strain the puree and add the seasoning according to taste. Garnish with coriander leaves and some diced carrot and beetroot. Serve hot.
