Posted: Jun 03, 2015
Improving vocabulary is the first step when trying to improve your Spoken English skills. Without good vocabulary it is difficult or probably impossible to speak fluent English. Always remember that it is not sufficient to know the meaning of a word. You must know where and how to use it. Here are some easy steps which can help you improve your English vocabulary.
- Spend 15 min everyday reading a newspaper or magazine –Reading newspaper is really a very good habit and it helps to focus on good vocabulary. Try to give 15 minutes of time regularly to an English newspaper or magazine. Make it a habit and you’ll soon start feeling confident about using new words.
- Use a Dictionary - It is likely that while reading a newspaper or magazine, you would come across some new words and you’ll not able to understand their meaning. So always keep a dictionary handy. Read and underline difficult words, check the meaning in the dictionary and write it down in a notebook. After that, try to make sentences using the new words and keep using them in your day to day life.
3. Set a specific goal – It is important to set specific goals, such as- why are you learning English conversations classes in West Delhi?, What you want to be in your life? Etc. If you know why you are putting in the efforts you’ll definitely lead to success. Always set clear goals and be focused on them.
- Try crossword puzzles– Solving word-related puzzles is a fun and effective way to make your word power stronger. Solve crossword puzzles, play scrabble, and other word building games. This is the most enjoyable way to learn new words.
- Listen to English Radio & Television Programs– Listening and watching content in English will help you learn effective usage of new words. So choose what kind of content you enjoy (comedy, drama, music, action etc.) and keep watching and listening.
- Use a word three times and it’s yours– Research shows that after using a new word in your communication thrice, you will never forget it. So when you try to improve your vocabulary, focus more on using the new words, rather than trying to learn the meaning.
