A crossover is a vehicle built using the unibody construction with features of a station wagon or hatchback. Crossovers are slowly gaining more and more popularity in urban suburbs, going by public demand and what major car manufacturers are offering. Fiat also has come with a crossover – the Avventura, which is based on its Punto hatchback. It was first unveiled at the 2014 Auto Expo and soon made its way onto our roads.

Fiat Avventura is essentially a Punto but looks more bulky and rugged. A big spare wheel at the rear, skid guards, bash plates, plastic cladding, 16 inch alloy wheels and aluminium roof rails totally transform the Avventura to a sporty car. Its aggressive sloping front bumper is flanked by sweptback headlights. It is difficult to miss the name ‘Avventura’, written rather prominently on the side moulding.

One is welcomed inside the Avventura by a spacious cabin and comfortable seats. The dashboard looks cool and comes with a soft touch grey insert and a set of dials, the compass and clinometers and a yaw indicator. There is an extensive use of leather on the seats, dashboard and door trims. 5 people can sit in comfortably assured of ample leg room and head space.

Fiat Avventura is available in two engines. One is a 1.4 litre FIRE petrol unit producing 90 ps of peak power at 6000 rpm and 115 NM torque at 4500 rpm. The other is a 1.3 MJD diesel motor producing 90 ps and 209 NM of power and torque respectively. Both engines are mated to a 5 speed manual transmission. The diesel engine is a punchy unit while the petrol one is relatively less forceful. Avventura gets high ground clearance of 205 mm and a stiff suspension which helps in a composed ride on bumpy roads. The NVH levels inside the cabin are well under control.

The top-end models get climate control, rear AC vents, adjustable driver seat, electrically adjustable mirrors and an audio system with Bluetooth connectivity. The car has dual airbags and ABS with EBD as safety measures. The only drawback felt here is the lack of parking sensors and low height driving position. The large windshield offers a good visibility though. Another downside is the complicated mechanism to remove the rear mounted spare wheel. The Avventura comes with hydraulic steering which gives driver the confidence to push harder when needed. It is overall a fun to drive car.

To sum it up, Fiat Avventura is an excellent cruiser, handles fairly well, has all the possible comforts and is a spacious car. It is rugged and stylish but at the same time offers all the practicalities of a small hatchback. It is priced between Rs 5.99 to 8.17 lakhs.
