All living things need to be well nourished to be able to stay alive and function properly. Animals get nutrition from eating foodstuffs. These foodstuffs are then broken down into little components which the body can absorb in a process known as digestion. The digestive system is made up of different organs which work together to aid digestion. The digestive system needs to be healthy for it to be able to aid normal digestion and allow for the body to be able to function properly.

Digestive organs

The organs which work together to make digestion possible include the mouth, pharynx, esophagus, diaphragm, stomach, spleen, liver, pancreas and the lower gastrointestinal tract which consists of the small intestine, caecum and the large intestine. These organs also produce enzymes which act on food for the body to be able extract the nutrients from the food. These enzymes include lingual lipase, amylase, lysozyme, haptocorrin, pepsin, hydrochloric acid, intrinsic factor, mucin, gastrin, gastric lipase, ductal cells, acinar cells, trypsinogen, chymotrypsinogen, carboxypeptidase, erepsin, maltase, lactase and sucrose amongst many others. All of these organs if not properly taken care of, could be infected with different diseases which would have a negative effect on the digestive system as well the wellness of the entire body.

Diseases of the digestive system

Some of the diseases which could affect the digestive system include:

Gastroesophageal reflux disease (gerd): popularly known as heartburn is caused when stomach acid enters into the esophagus. This leads to a pain in the chest.

Jaundice: this is caused when bile metabolic by-products enters into body tissues from the blood. This leads to the yellowing of the whites of the eyes and the skin.

Diverticulosis/diverticulitis: this occurs when small pouches appear on the walls of the large intestine. Fecal materials are sometimes stuck in the pouches and causes inflammation and discomfort.

Cirrhosis: a liver disease which occurs mainly as a result of excessive intake of alcohol. It changes the color of the liver to orange-yellow.

Portal hypertension: it is mainly caused by excessive intake in alcohol which leads to obstruction of blood flow in the liver and liver damage. It further leads to engorgement of veins and an increase in blood pressure.
