Cultural Importance of the Antique Gallery in India
Posted: Jun 05, 2015
Many kinds of art galleries exist in India to portray different aspects related to her identity. The entire cultural and artistic landscape of India is dominated by one common feature, art, which is the portrayal of India’s rich diversity. Indian people have always loved art and their appreciation goes way beyond analysis and positivity and critical reviews can be found on the most unique platforms and in the most unusual forms. Even the common people of this country have the tenderness and sensitivity to show tolerance towards diverse ideas and forms.
In the recent days, this appreciation has gone up in some sections of society, especially the youth and the upcoming artists, but it has seen a downfall in the most conservative and orthodox sections. Many traditional art forms are neglected and hence, the antique gallery has to rise to their rescue. The importance of antique galleries is not only preservation of antiques and antique art forms but also to spread awareness regarding them so that modern versions keep coming up and the art never dies out. Mankind should add and build up to its heritage and not destroy it. It is the most important remedy for success and development as a species. This is the greater cause that an antique gallery facilitates.
Concerns for the Modern Antique Gallery in India
Antique galleries and preservation institutions have been appreciated and supported by successive governments in India as they go down well with public opinion. People of various sections like to see their heritage take centre stage in our country. The cause of concern here is of majoritarianism, wherein the majority dominates terms and the government acts to please it. The antique preservation cannot be sectarian. A policy, which is compatible with all sections, must be framed irrespective of the demographic or political relevance of these sections in the society.
The other concern is the focus of new galleries and vintage showcases on ambiance much more than substance. Showbiz is taking over a very delicate and academic industry. Art collection and antique preservation is not a commercial sector and should be treated as one. Whether it is a showcase of antique paintings, vintage cars, and antiquarian books or sculptures all these forms must be appreciated because of their own worth and not for the flamboyance that surrounds them. Public opinion merely cannot be used as a guideline to judge the importance of an antique. The academicians, experts, and artists are the best judges in this regard.
The antique galleries of this country need a makeover where focus must shift on the subjects back again. The twisted and modified presentations are great as long as they preserve the integrity of the art and ocean of knowledge, which is associated with a true antique.
