Receding Gums and Dental Implants
Posted: Jun 05, 2015
Dental implants will need secure structures which will provide a firm base where they can be attached to. These structures are the jawbone and the gum tissue, which surround the implants as they are embedded into the jaw. If any of these structures are compromised, the integrity of the implants may also be at risk. In some cases, it is nearly impossible to place an implant if the jawbone or the gum tissue is compromised, such as when a patient has receding gums. The gums have to be healthy enough to be able to support and protect the implants when they are placed on the jawbone; otherwise, the implant treatment can fail.
Gum recession is commonly caused by severe gum disease. As the gum problem progresses without any treatment done, the gum tissue starts to pull away from the tooth, causing the tooth roots and the sensitive tooth area to be exposed. A receding gums problem causes the teeth to become sensitive to even the slightest pressure, or any change in temperature (such as when eating something cold/hot); the sensitive tooth parts will also be exposed to dental problems if they are not covered with the gums. A person with receding gums will need to have this problem treated prior to getting dental implants, because the implants will need the protection and support from that only the gum tissue can give.
Gum recession can be done with a gum grafting procedure. The gum graft material is placed on the area of the gums that needs to be augmented, to stimulate the growth of new gum tissue. The graft is positioned in such a way that the root part of the implants will be adequately covered and protected when the titanium roots are placed. Any damaged portion of the gums will also be treated with a gum graft, to ensure that the gum tissue will be strong enough to be able to protect and support the successful placement of dental implants. In case the jawbone has also been compromised due to bone deterioration, a bone graft may also be done prior to the placement of dental implants. Bone grafting material is allowed to integrate with surrounding bone tissue, resulting in the improvement of the jawbone structure. After a few months, once the jawbone has reached the necessary volume and once it is deemed strong enough, the dental implants can be placed to solve missing teeth problems.
