After family illness, SC couple moves wedding to unusual venue

An Upstate bride and groom called off their wedding after her father became severely ill.

They were able to get most of their money back, but couldn't cancel the honeymoon.

So they decided to make the best of the situation and have the wedding in a less than typical venue.

Like most blushing brides, Stephanie Hovanec had wedding jitters as she prepared to walk down the aisle, but instead of getting ready at home or in a hotel room, she got dressed in a hospital room.

"It's been a roller coaster," Hovanec said.

Earlier this month, her father underwent a procedure on his heart. Made it through the surgery with no complications, but the next day he took a turn for the worst and suffered a massive stroke.

His wife and mother of the bride Brenda Ellison said, "He's just the cornerstone for everything and this has been so devastating."

Faced with the possibility of not having her father walk her down the aisle, the couple canceled the big day.

"We had a different type of wedding planned," groom John Hovanec said.

"So we decided it wasn't worth it to have the big wedding without him there," his bride said.

Unfortunately, they couldn't get a return on their honeymoon, so their family encouraged them to move forward with the wedding.

"Basically we just changed the location," Hovanec said.

They got married at the Roger C. Peace Rehabilitation Hospital where her father is now receiving physical therapy to regain his speech and walk again.

"It was awesome seeing him sitting over there and smiling," the bride said.

"It just wouldn't be complete without him," the groom said.

Although it wasn't the big wedding they planned, the bride and groom said they wouldn't have it any other way.

"I hate that it happened, but at least I can say I still have my dad here today," the bride said.

"She's her dad's little girl," the groom said.

When they return from their honeymoon the bride and groom say they're going on a mission trip with their church next month.

The Roger C. Peace Rehabilitation Hospital says this was their first wedding.
