If you are not familiar with paint protection film, it is a protective film installed in cars to protect paint from potential damage like rock chips, stains, bug splatters and other minor abrasions. The thermoplastic urethane film (also referred to as clear bra) is clear and usually invisible if it’s properly installed.

Its protective and invisibility nature clearly explains how the name "clear bra" came into existence.

How Paint Protection Film was born

The concept behind PPF actually came from the military. Due to the continuous damaging of the sensitive parts of military helicopters during Vietnam war, the military had to come up with an effective strategy to curb the situation. Hence, the military assigned 3M the task to come up with an innovative solution to protect these rather delicate parts from damage. And that’s how paint protection film was born. Years after, the automobile sector adopted the clear bra concept after seeing its worth.

How Clear Bra is Installed

Most people have no idea whatsoever how PPF is installed. And it’s not astonishing at all that some people think it’s sprayed others claiming it’s painted. Let’s just clear this confusion once and for all. Clear bra is a thin adhesive plastic thread that is applied manually. Below are general brief steps on how paint protection film for cars is installed.

Step #1- the vehicles must be super clean before the whole installation process starts

Step #2- the slip solution (mixture of baby shampoo and water) is prepared first in a spray bottle. Then water and alcohol solution are also prepared separately. It’s important to add the correct amount of solutions to ensure a smooth installation.

Step #3- the area where PPF is installed is then cleaned with prep solvent to eradicate any impurities like dust and grease.

Step #4- areas to be installed are sprinkled with slip solution each section at a time. Hands must be washed thoroughly before starting the installation because even the smallest amount of dirt can ruin the appearance. A squeegee is used when applying the film to give it a firm look and to avoid water bubbles.

*Note: installing PFF is very delicate process hence you need an expert who specializes in that field to get the job done right.

Where you can get clear bras

Today, clear bras are available almost in every car dealership or garages. Automobile owners are however advised to purchase PPFs from certified shops and dealers if they don’t want to end up with counterfeit films. Many have actually fallen victims to fake films. The film starts to peel off the very first week of installation yet it’s supposed to last 5-7 years. So, to avoid being ripped off, buy quality and authentic paint protection film from authorized and certified car dealers.
