Backgammon, or ‘The Game of Kings’, is believed to have been in existence since 3000BC, and its earliest origins can be traced back to the Persian Empire. Recorded as being the oldest game in the history of the World, examples of Backgammon being played have been found in many early cultures including India, Egypt, Greece, Rome and China. One archaeological uncovering that occurred recently saw the unearthing of quite a few ancient backgammon boards. One of the boards found was made of ebony and is the oldest known board, with the playing pieces made of turquoise and agate.

Initially, backgammon was played on hard surfaces such as wood and the dice were made of pottery, stones, wood or bones and the markers were made of stone. Its popularity amongst the elite in Rome had it famously known as "The Game of Kings". Originally called Battle on Wood or Takhteh Nerd in Persian this game, that was originally played with three dice, later came to be played with just two dices. Its popularity game as Exclusive gifts gradually reached Europe as well.

This modern version that is played by individuals across the World supposedly come from the 17th Century English game known by the name of ‘Tables’. The game which had doublets playing twice and with the opponent loosing or being unable to move their checkers home meant the other player could win and triple the stakes. The clever English designers developed the game, post its ban in a different way. They developed the Backgammon board game to give it a look of a book, meaning it was divided in the middle and could be closed and carried as a book, thus saving any scrutiny.
