Want a simple way for cleaning grout in your bath, shower or kitchen? Now I'll share with you my secret recipe for making homemade grout cleaner that works miracles. And what's more, you only need two ingredients: bleach and baking soda.

Five years ago, when me and my family moved to our new apartment in Melbourne, the place was a real dump. The area that needed most attention was the bathroom. It looked dreadful and the grout was particularly disgusting. I didn't hire a professional grout cleaning team because I was motivated to clean my new home by myself. After I used this grout cleaner, my bathroom was like new.

There are many recipes out there for homemade grout cleaner, but I wanted a powerful one that was easy to make. I ended up with this grout cleaner recipe which only has two ingredients, and it worked perfectly. But if you need any cleaning help, hiring a cleaning company will be of great use to you.

Homemade Grout Cleaning Products

Here is what you need:

  • 3/4 cup of baking soda
  • 1/4 cup of bleach
  • an old toothbrush

That is all. Now follow the next few steps.

Mix the bleach and baking soda together in a bowl until the mixture looks like a thick paste. After that apply the paste to the dirty grout lines and leave it for five minutes.

The bleach will do most of the work and after the five minutes have passed scrub the grout with the toothbrush. This will help the paste work its way deeper into the grout.

Wait five more minutes and rinse the cleaner off of the grout. Use a handheld shower head or just a damp rag and wipe the cleaner.

The grout does sometimes turn darker when it’s wet. And if you’re not totally impressed with how sparkling white your grout is when you finish rinsing it, you must wait a few hours until it dries!

Few Important Grout Cleaning Notes

Read these notes because you'll be using bleach.

  • Make sure you are wearing old clothes. I figured it wouldn’t splatter so I didn’t change before doing this, and now my jeans have three big white spots! There is a surprising amount of splatter, so just change first.
  • Take rubber gloves and protect your hands from irritation.
  • Open windows or wear a respirator to protect your mouth, nose and lungs.
  • Wear safety glasses to protect your eyes.
  • If you use a washcloth or rag to wipe the cleaner off, you must make sure it’s something that’s good to be bleached.

How is the state of your bathroom grout? I’m really liking these do-it-yourself cleaning recipes because they work fantastic.

This way grout cleaning is cheap, non-toxic, and works better than commercial detergents.
