Maximizing Small Bathroom Space with a Remodeling Project

Finding the house of your dreams isn’t easy. After you’ve gone through the residence and fell in love with every room, saying no is the last thing on your mind; until you encounter the tiny, itty-bitty bathroom.

While the bathroom shouldn’t be the only room that determines whether you buy or don’t buy a house, it can have a significant effect on your choice. You don’t want to be uncomfortable in the bathroom. The bathroom - whether you’re showering, using the toilet, or getting ready - should be a place where you have no worries or concerns and you can relax and spend a few minutes to yourself.

If you’re dealing with a bathroom that is extremely small, you can maximize its appearance with a remodeling project that will take your mind off the fact that it’s very tiny.

Reduce the Furnishing

Because you’re dealing with a small bathroom, you don’t have the ability to furnish it with a lot of objects. This may mean losing the vanity sink, getting rid of the towel cabinet, and only clearing out room for a shower, toilet and sink. Without furnishings, your bathroom can still look elegant, it just won’t feel crowded.

Designate a closet outside of the bathroom for things like toilet paper, towels, and toiletries. If you want to keep space for items such as your toothbrush or combs, install a cabinet mirror, so these items can be stored and kept out of sight. If you don’t prefer hanging a shower caddy, consider installing a metal shelf in your shower that permanently hangs on the wall.

You can also build shelving above the toilet, regardless of what kind of toilet you have. Built-in shelves can hang above and store towels or toilet paper and will stay out of the way since they won’t require any floor space.

Replace Toilet and Sink

Unless you’re going to tear down the walls and expand the space in your bathroom, you’re going to have to maximize the appearance by keeping everything in the bathroom looking fresh. This means not cutting corners on picking out a nice sink and toilet.

Since your sink is going to stand on its own, you’ll want to purchase one that is small, does its job, but still looks nice upon first sight. There are many sinks that offer different style bowls, as well as bodies, so the options are endless. Consider buying a tankless toilet, which can reduce the space that a toilet with a tank would take up.

Skip the Bathtub

If you don’t have small children in the home or can go without ever taking a bath again, consider ditching the bathtub and having a shower installed.

A bathtub can take up a lot of space and make your bathroom appear smaller because of the wall that, in a way, cuts off the bathroom. If you don’t want to reduce the size of the shower, you can still make your bathroom appear larger by getting rid of the tub.

Complete Makeover

After you’ve decided what needs to be replaced or updated in your bathroom, you can also decide whether or not you want to keep your bathroom the way it is. If you’re planning on removing or changing everything in your bathroom, you may want to hire a professional and ask if it would be worth changing the floorplan around.

Depending on what kind of changes you’re going to make, it may make more sense for your toilet to be where the shower is, or vice versa. You may not realize how much time you’re going to be spending in your bathroom, so it’s important to stay comfortable and happy with it. Make whatever changes you need to have a relaxing, bathroom experience.
