Modern methods of making wedding-music "mixtapes"

Q: Our son is getting married this summer in Bali. We would like to create a playlist of music for the wedding and reception from our iTunes. We aren't very tech savvy and would like to know the best way to copy and save the music to play on a device there. Help!— Reta Nass

A: Ahh... the mixtape is alive! Of course, these days, no one uses tape. Some no longer use CDs or even MP3s. The go-to music playlist is via streaming. Apple last week announced Apple Music, which includes the ability to command iPhone's artificially intelligent Siri to do stuff like "Play the most popular songs from 1999."

Of course, you need Internet to stream "the entire Apple Music catalog" or Spotify or Pandora, etc. And at a wedding, who has time to worry about reliable Internet?

So, we backtrack to digital files or, if your computer has one, a CD burner.

For iTunes users, create a playlist and save it to CD in three steps:

  1. Open iTunes Music, press the Shift+Command+N keys (for Macs) or Ctrl+N keys (for PCs), to create a new playlist.
  2. 2Name the playlist and click the "Add to" button to select songs for it.
  3. 3When done, that playlist shows up in iTunes' left column. Hover and right-click over the playlist's name to reveal "Burn Playlist to Disc." Don't forget to put a blank disk in your computer.

More options:

Other programs have similar options.

  • In Spotify, you also press Ctrl+N to create a new playlist. Or do a quick search to find step-by-step instructions for the program you're using.
  • On an iPhone, create a new playlist by going to Apple's music app, then select the "Playlists" icon and you'll see the plus sign to create a "New Playlist." Name it and add music.
  • For those who keep the playlist on a USB drive, memory card or even a hard drive, plug that device into your computer and create a new folder for the playlist. Open iTunes, select the entire playlist (press "Ctrl" and "A") and drag the whole thing to the new folder. You'll need a device that can play those music files, so double check.
