Preparation Tips for Business Travel

Working in corporate America takes a lot of hard work. Many work from entry-level positions after years of earning their degree. Afterward, the work continues through long hours dedicated to understanding their company policies, products and services. This dedication often translates into more responsibilities, and the higher you move up in a company, the greater the likelihood you’ll need to travel. The implications of being asked to travel are great; your employer is allowing you to become the face of the company. You’ll likely talk with clients on behalf of your boss, speaking on their policies and ethics, while ensuring the quality of your offered product. It’s a major responsibility, but it can also be quite enjoyable. Success on these trips is contingent upon maximizing your resources and time. You’ll need to be prepared for any possible scenario that may arise on the road, from extra funds, to even a physical map of the area. To ensure you have both a successful and enjoyable trip, you’ll need to prepare. Have your receptionist draw up an itinerary to begin your research on the areas to which you’ll travel, as you determine the most efficient course of action.

Checklist

Once you’re on the road, you can’t go back if you’ve forgotten something important. A checklist can help prevent you from making a mistake. From clothes to chargers, make sure you write down all of your necessities. As you pack, check off what you’ve place in your bags, making note of where important things are. For example, it’s important to know the exact location of your phone chargers and presentation notes. You’ll need the charger once you arrive to your hotel room to avoid missing calls, and travel provides the perfect circumstance for preparing presentation notes.

Checked Baggage

Understand the fees associated with checking baggage before you travel, and note the largest sized bag you can bring with you on the plane with your designated airline. Checking baggage can be a tricky situation, as it increases the likelihood of losing luggage. When you’re traveling for business purposes, the last thing you want to worry about is missing items. A suit can even be placed in a carry-on, when folded correctly to allow you to bring a smaller bag. Make sure your hotel has a dry-cleaning service, as well. This will help you to bring less, and avoid checked baggage.

Appearance

Don’t travel in comfortable sweats. Remember, you are representing your company. In doing so, everyone who sees you will associate your face with the brand. Shave, bring the right supplies and dress in business casual attire. Remember that you may see associates on the plane, and people can overhear the company name on the phone. Dress for the job you are working hard to attain, and others will notice. You will need comfortable shoes. Make sure to wear your most comfortable loafers. Now is not the time to wear your brand new shoes to break-in. You may need to walk long distances in the airport, depending on the location of your airline. Be prepared to walk.

Timing

Understand the area to which you are traveling. Know how you will arrive to the hotel, and the length of time it takes to get from your hotel to your clients. First impressions are everything, especially with business. You’ll need to be on time, and blaming tardiness on ill-planning is unacceptable. Researching the area beforehand will help you to avoid this embarrassment.
