EPDM O-Rings in Industrial Applications

EPDM o-rings and seals are made from the material ethylene-propylene and they are applied to a diverse range of industries where specific sealing and fluid containment are essential. Seals and o-rings can be produced to exacting specifications of the end-users, and epdm seals are primarily for use in the prevention of seepage in may components and parts. Depending upon the application, ethylene-propylene sealing components can be in the form of gaskets, sealing strips or o-rings, EPDM washers and more custom molded shapes. EPDM has the advantage of been able to withstand degradation through prolonged weathering, and they can be found in applications in constructions where draught exclusion from a building is needed. The exclusion of air and water penetration or flow is another common usage of EPDM seals.
High temperature resistance epdm o-ring is also another formulation where it is necessary to have sealing components subject to extreme temperature. EPDM seals can often be manufactured with an adhesive strip for ease of installation.
Of the many elastomeric products available in the market, a synthetic rubber which is suited to a very diverse range of applications and which is composed of an M-class ethylene-propylene diene monomer rubber is what is termed as EPDM rubber. The content of ethylene in the compound ranges from between 45 percent to 75 percent, with an increase in percentage of ethylene composition giving rise to a corresponding increase in the polymer's loading capabilities. An increase density of cross linking is the result of peroxide curing of these compounds, when comparison is made with their amorphous alternative. A 2.5 percent to 12 percent composition of diene, measured as a part by weight, plays the role in crosslinks during the process of curing with the inclusion of resin and sulphur. The diene is the active coagent in curing with peroxide, and this gives rise to a final grade of material that is resistant to tackiness and flow during application and installation.
In terms of compatibility, EPDM displays excellent results with hydraulic fluids as well as to ketones, to varying temperatures in water and alkalis. However, EPDM o-ring and seals do not work well in contact with gasoline and oils, hydrocarbons (aliphatic) halogenated solvents, aromatic hydrocarbons and particularly to acids that are highly concentrated. The range of elastomeric products that are available for use in sealing include FFKM, silicone, nitrile as well as viton o-ring.
EPDM material can be used as a sealing component as in cold rooms because it is an excellent insulation. EPDM can also be used in vehicles especially, in the sealing of car doors, trunks and so on. In comparison with other elastomeric sealing compounds, EPDM is affordable, making it a widely accepted compound with applications that span a very wide range of industries.
