In places with subfreezing climatic conditions, home insulation becomes an important aspect. Having windows with air gaps is one of the basic ways to go about this process. But even after this, the thermal system becomes necessary and ends up increasing your electric bill. Having additional window coverings like shutters help decrease this cost. The window shutter when closed trap a layer of air between the wood and the glass and since air is a bad conductor of heat, this functions as an insulation system. Also, different window covering like tints, blinds, shutters can be used to improve the aesthetics of the house. Let us take a look at the various types of commonly used coverings for windows.

Cafe style covers only the lower half of the window while keeping the top open. Tier on tier covers the whole window but the top and bottom sections can be operated separately. The shutter can also be classified as traditional, California or plantation as per the design, size and number of louvres per frame.

Some are made of vinyl, polyester or PVC. These are less expensive when compared to the wooden or more expensive plastics. Due to the involvement of strings in the blinds, it is not really safe in houses having young children as there have been over 500 reported cases of strangulation due to these strings or cords.
